OT: Hi-Res Pics of UK Spec B18C6's Audi S3..for 'Downeybear11'
Hey Yoshi...
you didn't expect me to replace #4824 with something common / mundane did you?
The fact that there is a waiting list of about 7 months, and Audi don't make too many of them should keep this kinda exclusive-ish!
Glen.

Got a black S3 that comes out to the local Autocross here in western WA.
Nice ride, 1.8T with quattro right?

they imported it, i assume? if they (audi) had brought the S3 over, the ITR might not be in my driveway right now.
That first pic is very nice, i love the background.

Glen,
There you are. I could not find the post where I asked about the motor in your car. Nice pics. I see from the pics what motor the car has. I was wrong in the other post.
What do those cars sell for over there, and anone kno what the equivalent price would be here in the states.
And I aggree about the selling all cars from all manufacturers here.

Demian,
"Got a black S3 that comes out to the local Autocross here in western WA.

Yup, a 1.8T.
It is the TT225 quattro engine and drivetrain...but running 0.1 bar less boost than the TT.
Basically the same 1.8 20v 4 cylinder motor, with the bigger turbo, lower compression, modded head, twin intercooler, 'fly by wire' throttle, 6 speed manual gearbox and quattro 4wd.
It puts out about 215 BHP (audi claim 210...but with an exhaust - which I already have fitted! - it's up to about 215, and about 200 ish ft/lbs of torque.
With a simple chip change that is up to about 270 BHP and 300 ft/lbs of torque!
And the interior is soooo nice, and I thought the ITR Recaros were good!...oh, and I goofed on posting the pics above, and posted one twice. I've now put the correct photo in..one of the drivers side of the interior.
Peter,
"they imported it, i assume?"
Hmm...they must have...I didn't think you guys got the A3 or S3 in North America.
"if they (audi) had brought the S3 over, the ITR might not be in my driveway right now."
They really are completely different cars...but both very good at what they were designed for. The ITR is raw, the S3 very refined.
"Glen! How goes it? All is well here...drop me an email to say hi! Car still looks good! "
I'll mail you tonight Jeff....

The UK price is £24700.00 basic...without the sunroof, pearl paint, heated seats, CD player, 6 disc CD changer or 'Bose' speakers & amplifier. With all that lot fitted it runs out at about £28,000 UKP
About $39500USD in todays terms. Not cheap.

hmmm . . . same price as a new S4. i'd rather have the S3, though...
thanks for the info, glen! i still want one, if audi ever brings one over, it will most definitely accompany my ITR in the driveway.
either that or a new WRX. i still really like them, especially after driving one.

The difference between the S3 and S4 is the awd layout. S3 is a TT in different skin. This means a haldex FWD default system. It behaves like a fwd car until it slips. The 1.8T engine is always mounted transverse.
The S4 uses the V6 biturbo mounted longitudinal. This is the Torsen system where it is split (I believe) 50:50 until slip is detected.
The S3 is far from an "S4 hatch". Its basically a TT hatch. Or a 4wd golf.
But yeah, I think the S3 is "cooler". And I would still rather have an STi 6 sedan.

bah... this is the view all s3 owners have all the time:

jk... at the very least it should have been championship white

hahahha how come you poms dont get the chrome side mirrors for the S3? or is that an option?
thos car are alrite, i raced one way back, it launches quite hard but really lacks topend. 3rd gear and i was pulling like crazy.

"The difference between the S3 and S4 is the awd layout. S3 is a TT in different skin. "
I get what you are saying here...but, you could also call it a Golf 4 in a different skin (as the Golf 4 motion uses the same basic running gear) or a SEAT Leon Cupra4 as again, the same running gear is used.
"This means a haldex FWD default system. It behaves like a fwd car until it slips."
Spot on...of course there are advantages of not driving all 4 wheels all the time. You are not wasting power driving wheels that are doing no good..the Haldex unit will deliver 100% of the engines torque to the rear wheels in less than 75 degrees of front wheel slip. Combined with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) the Haldex system is surprisingly effective...so much so that Audi are considering dropping the more normal fixed 4wd quattro system for the electronic Haldex type in future models - acording to my dealer!
"The 1.8T engine is always mounted transverse."
Not so..in the A4 the 1.8T is mounted lengthways in the engine bay, like the VW Passat - both these cars get the 1.8T engine.
The S3 is far from an "S4 hatch". Its basically a TT hatch. Or a 4wd golf.
Actually, if you are being correct according to the date of production of each model, the A3 body was the first to use the platform, the Golf 4, TT and SEAT Leon all came afterwards...so technically, the TT is just an A3 with a sharp suit on!
"But yeah, I think the S3 is "cooler". And I would still rather have an STi 6 sedan."
The S3 is a lot smaller...it's fractionally smaller than a Golf 4 and quite a lot shorter than an ITR.
The Impreza is a better drivers car than the S3..but it's not put together as well, and it loses big money in depreciation...something the S3 does not.
I guess if I wanted to throw away £10,000 UKP ($14,000 USD) in a years depreciation I might have bought a STI6...but I didn't. I think the S3 is cooler too...
Glen.

That'll be all the S3 owners and most of the ITR owners too then?
I guess we'll never know as it doesn't look like the UK will be getting the new ITR...but we get the S3 which you won't be getting
Oh...and we get the CTR too...which you also won't be getting!
"hahahha how come you poms dont get the chrome side mirrors for the S3? or is that an option? "
We do. you can have them if you want - I didn't - presonally I think they look *****...but that's my choice.
"thos car are alrite, i raced one way back, it launches quite hard but really lacks topend. 3rd gear and i was pulling like crazy."
Let's not forget my last car was an ITR...same spec as yours, and I've never said the S3 will out-pull an ITR. In the dry it's close...in the wet the ITR would be as well going home and parking in the garage...no competition. And that's from experience.
The S3 will never be a rtue drivers car like a Type-R...nor will it ever be as good a track car...it's too heavy.
Glen.

I've never driven a Leon Cupra, or Cupra 4...but the Ibiza Cupra Sport 16v...like this one:

...I have. This belongs to my girlfriend. It's the last model before the facelift and the 1.8T motor, this one uses the 2.016v Mk3 Golf GTi Engine / box...and pretty swift it is too.
These photos were taken when it was new in and standard (1999)...it's now up to 170BHP and sits somewhat lower!
"-with the Imp you are going for raw performance over luxury, and in the S3 you get a bit of both."
Never a truer work spoken!
"If you have an S3 (it sounds like you do) you are one lucky bastard! But I have always liked looks of the old Impreza, I would have gone for that instead..."
The blue one in the photos above is mine!
I also liked the old shape Impreza...but since the new 'bug eyed' beast came out, any aspirations I may have had to own one vanished - I just couldn't drive a car that ugly!
