It'd be best to check with the DMV regarding this. I would assume that a motorcycle license (class M1/2) is under the same conditions that a driver's license (class C) would be under, meaning that you can have it for a little bit, but if you're planning on staying in CA, then you'll have to get a CA DL. I don't believe you'll have to take the classes, but you'll probably have to take the "behind-the-wheel" test.

I think since you already have your license, there shouldn't be a waiting/grace-period to take the test (not permit).

regardless of you class C you need to go down and get your permit. Then you have to wait a month or so before you are able to apply for your M1. If you take a safety course before you turn 18 the cost is lower. Also then you won't have to take the riding course to get you M1. You will have to take a written test both to get your permit, and again when you get your M1.

I am 90%+ sure about this info, but I didn't go check to see that it is still current. If you want to be really sure check the DMV page. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/faq/dlfaq.htm#MINORMC

easiest, safest, best way to get your M1:
* take the MSF course - it's about 50% less if you're under 18
you dont need anything but a Class C driver's license
* the course waives the DMV riding test
* once u complete the 3-day course, you'll get an orange DMV slip
take the slip to the DMV...pass a written motorcycle AND driving test (yes both)
...and BAM! you just got yourself an M1
