What is Your Favorite Professional Motorsport?
I'm watching the MotoGP races tonight on speedvision and just started wondering what other people in this forum consider their favorite motorsport...
You have to seperate CART and the IRL... I like CART and usually attend 2 races a year, but you will not find me that interested in IRL.
Wassup,
I personally like F1 because this is were I first heard about Honda VTEC motors. Back in the day like early 90's the Honda V-10 turbo reigned supreme and was basically unmatched in the circuit series! Mclaren won countless manufacturer and driving titles with it. I hear that this is where Honda really developed the VTEC technology. Ferrari and Ford couldn't touch the Honda.
Today F1 isn't that popular in the US as with open wheel racing in general. Maybe because of the Euro flavor! The only way you can catch one of the races is if you have Speedvision and I don't.
But the thing that inteigues me most is the sound of the motors despite all the rule changes and elimination of the turbo. They kinda sound like motorcycle engines! Just imagine havin' a NA V-12 that has 900 hp and revs to 18k RPM. That's nuts! The technology in F1 is second to none and the cars have more carbon fiber on them than paint. I hear on most F1 cars the front of the engine bay is lined with 24k gold to protect the drivers from the extreme heat from the motor. The paddle shifters, clutchless tranny, and the removable quasi-steering wheel/ LED speedo combo make this the ultimate race car! Can you say millon dollar car!
No wonder why my fav car movie is the classic Formula One with James Garner

I look most forward to watch a World Challenge race or maybe Grand-Am Cup (whenever they decide to air this year's races...).
However, I voted for F1 because there's just nothing else that comes even close to it.

Not tryin to flame, but you have your facts mixed up; only Honda Turbos were V-6s; V-10s (starting with the McLaren MP4/5) and V-12s were normally aspirated.

And 1.5L V6s at that !

1.5 Litre V-10's.... around 1500hp for qualifying.
yes...1.5L, 70lb of boost, the turbo era in F1 was great.
Especially after this weekend I think CART is a better bet for an exciting race, while Formula One is better for technical innovation. The first couple F1 races were exciting but lately its been quite boring, especially at 5:30AM.
also, CART is not too distant from F1 as far as technology goes.

When is F1 on TV, how can you really be big fan when they are never on. I am always tuning in Speedvision, and never see F1.
At my fathers house he has a super-duper satelite dish that picks up TV stations from Spain, France and Italy. So once in a while I catch some really good F1 action. It's rare that I catch it. But I'm sure if I made a point out of it, I'd see a lot more F1 stuff. CART is OK but not worth watching IMO. Touring cars, and Speedvison cup, etc. That stuff is cool, and so are road rally/dirt rally events.
Formula One, hands down. Ferrari is winning this season, but I think the McLarens are the faster machines. Schumacher is amazing. And by the way, Formula 1 cars cost far more than one million $ each. Last year, DaimlerChrysler spent $150,000,000 on engine development alone with Ilmor, not including chassis development. We may have 6 separate engine blocks in use per season. No one currently employs a V-12. Higher revs are feasible due to the shorter stroke, but the frictional surface area, our fuel efficiency goals, and the length of a V-12 make it less optimal compared to a 10. I won't say but we are closing in on 900 hp, and short-living qualifying engines are even closer.
I am an engineering sub-contractor for Ilmor.

The BMWs have higher recorded straight line speeds. We have been experimenting with "unconventional" car setups, which have been profitable in evaluating aspects of design. Wait for the MP4/18 for the 2003 season. Just wait.
Hey ITR-01-269,
I could have sworn that the Ferrari and Jag motors were V-12's. I don't get to see F1 as much as I used to because I don't have Speedvision and I can only catch it a friends' house! ESPN used to be a little more dedicated until it started bein' shown on ESPN2 and Speedvision. So bear with me if I am not up to date on the technology!
