Default F*CK. wrong pistons=8bent intake valves.

well after trying to find out why my car would turn back on, me and "v-attack" decided to pull the head. so we did and we notice that the valves were off target. the block is an LS block with JE11.5 pistons.

i called JE back when the shop was assembling the block and ask if it was ok to run these pistons with an ITR head, they said yah its ok. well its not. now someone tell me why this happened. im sure its cuz the pistons were wrong.

are these pistons still usable, could i sell them? im not sure if all are bent, but im still replacing all 8 valves. dealer quoted me about $20 per vavle, probably like $15-17 at dealer cost. should i go with the ferrea valves, how much do they cost

Ouch. What was your timing set at? Are both the intake and exhaust valves the same diameter?

Edit: I got another look. Something was way off!

They're talking crank/cam timing not distributor timing.

Well according to the old crvtec.com, (with a stock b20 block and any cam larger than itr's) you could not adjust your timing more than 2deg either way or else the valves would touch the pistons. I realize that this is not your situation, but I thought maybe it would be along the same lines. For example, maybe you got a set of JE nonvtec pistons (if there is such a thing) for a ls block and the valve reliefs were not large enough and your timing was at +/- 2deg. This may not make any sense. It was just a thought.

jeffC i beleive you are right tho. a friend came over and told me i can get the reliefs cut out more. i dont know, i could do that and save the time of basically building another block. or get the right pistons.

when i first started the project. i wanted an all motor LS (no flames please), then i got the ITR head. i called JE. told them i am putting an ITR head instead of LS head. told them i have ITR valves too. and they said that there is no problem.

man i should have known. all this time when the car was running it was just nicking the piston top, but when we took it to like 4.5-5K it just did its job

edit: its worth a try to call JE and tell then the prob. and see what they can do.

just wondering, why didn't you clay the motor? it would have prevented this.

i did clay the motor. i put clay in the releifs. and on the top of the pistons, but not right behind the reliefs cuz i trusted that these were the right pistons. it all comes down to my fault really for not knowing that LS pistons will not work with ITR valves. never trust anyone these days. they will tell you **** just to get off the phone with you.

Damn, to be honest if you have the original salesmans name i would raise some hell. Thats a pretty expensive screw up they cost you, they should be held reliable or at least work with you somehow.

Note to self: clay behind valve reliefs for extra insurance.

you should call autoraceparts.com (561) 840-1878 about new valves. i just got some rev valves for 14.50 each. they also quoted me for some ferrera valves (16 each, i think). great service, got here quick.

You dont happen to have a 33mm vtec valve laying around to even see if it fits into the relief, do ya?

im thinkin the other guys are right. obviously VTEC valve are bigger and the valves reliefs should almost go to the very outside of the piston like in C speeds picture. yours dont, as u can see. keep us updated i bet they arent VTEC pistons.

I have not used them yet, just asking...Are those the pistons JE makes just for the CRV-tec?
