what does knowck sensor do???

what does the knock sensor do? and if it is so important why do so many chipped ecus not look for it or not need it??

it tells when you car is having detonation but i dont know how it works really

It senses when your motor is knocking from using a gasoline with an octane too low, which won't combust right in certain motor environments (high compression mainly) and retards your timing as a result.
