Default Cam for SOHC

I'm gonna be gettin a cam soon and i wanted to know what would be the best SOHC cam for my 98 EX? What i have right now is a short ram intake and a cat-back. i'm planin on gettin a header too. Is there anything else i need to get before the cam so i wouldn't have any problems?

Just a daily driver, I'd get a ZEX street cam.

But get what ever is gonna help you out later on as well, so your not buying parts that will be useless down the road.

Depends on what you want out of the engine. Really.

There is a great website, well not that great...For D series motors...Check it out.

gude!!! you dont really need much..im not really familiar with the sohc but i would assume if you want to rev a bit higher to upgrade your valvetrain and things like that...you can get the cam anytime you want you dont really need anything but more mods will compliment each other ...naw mean son

some cams are aggresive and need aftermarket valve springs, retainers, or stems... It depends on what u want bro... if ur looking to get a lil more power buy more bolt ons... or built a custom junkyard turbo...

i dont know about everyone else but id say crower..reason why is because im running with some crower cams and valvetrain and it runs really strong..nothing has gone bad with it either..just that the idle is very low and it dies out a lot on the streets..but for a SOHC i dont think it will idle to low..but its just my opinion..up to you man

On a more serious note...If you want any power worth a **** out of the D16, you're going to have to do some other complimentary mods to go along with the cam. Standard I/H/E, cam gear, possibly an FPR and a VTEC controller. Go get that badboy tuned afterwards and you should see a decent increase in power.

If it was me i would also take it apart and strengthen the rods, and put some good o' A1 pistons to raise the compression... Then you'll see even more decent power...

EDIT: Just click on the D series info link in my sig... Research, Read, and Learn...

By the way... Single Cams

Although a great increase in power, tearing down a motor is just out of the question for some people. But you would get some nice nubers with those higher compression pistons.

12.5:1 is the stock GX compression, not what the compression would be if you stuck those pistons in your Y8.

I hear gude cams are regrinds. Any truth to that? And just out of curiosity does anyone know if any other makers of cams that are NOT regrinds. I hear alot of people who have had reground cams, of them wearing out. Being that the hardest part of the cam that came from the factory has been reground to the new profile, and so the new cam profile is not the hardest surface.

Does anyone have any advice. I want to get a cam, but and not sure of which one to get. I don't want to get a regrind.

for the ZEX street/strip cam, would you have to upgrade the valvetrain? also whats the general rev line that people rev to with the cam and valvetrain.

I know people that have used the cam on stock valvetrain for months with no problems. I know the problems do arise over the stock rev limit. You have possible valve float, etc. I belive if you stay around the stock rev limit and don't bounce the needle everyhting should be A-OK.

good thing you listen to me, Mike

the street/strip cam is fine on stock valvetrain, BUT, to utilize the full potential of the cam, you must upgrade the springs/retainer so you can rev as high as the cam gives power, 7800. I would not suggest this on stock valvetrain. The cam however, does show power gains up to 7800,....so you should rev to about 8 grand to stay in peak power range..which stock valvetrain won't handle with an aggressive cam.

I revved to 9 grand the other day on stock valvetrain though and nothing happened...lol

I hear they're on backorder...Ebay always seems to have something.

I think they go for $259 new? And you can always check the Zex website...Which should have been the obvious answer.
