taking apart engine tonight...
So I had a post on here a few weeks ago about my bro's block blowing a hole in it, anyway I found a block here from a fellow member for around 300 picked up, so were going to take it apart tonight to make sure it's just the block and get prepared for putting in the new one. We've got some manuals to help us, but is there anytihng you guys would recommend to watch out for and any help you can give to help us.....THX in advance!

That would be a good idea if it were my car, but we just need to get this back to stock and as CHEAP as possible

I the best advice i can give is just to stay organized. If this is your first time ripping apart the motor, have someone watch where everything was, not to mention lots of little bags to keep different missicellanous pieces all together. Just keep everything clearly marked and cleaned.
I remember when a couple of buds and I were ripping apart a GSR longblock to have it rebuilt before it was put into a hatch, we got the block back from the machine shop about 3 weeks later and were missing about a box of parts. No one knows where it went, but it was a bitch finding the pieces we lost, and much more expensive.
If you want some more tips tell us about what your doing, are you tearing everything down to the pistons out, or are you just swapping the blocks and bolting the head on? Anyhoo, should be fun.

Well my friend goes to Triton (mechanic school) but they mostly work on GM's like is camaro. Anway the block we're getting is bare, so were gonna have to rip EVERYTHING out of the old one into the new one. Any other tips?
Find a 99-00 Civic Si owner and trade him the stock GSR pistons for his Civic Si pistons. LOL Hopefully he wont know **** about compression ratios and tuning B series.
The bores are the same. So you will be able to use them.
With B16A pistons in your brother's GSR, the compression ratio will be an astonishing 11.3 : 1
Just swapping out the pistons.
For the sad Civic Si owner using the GSR P72 pistons..... His compression will be a turd like 9.2 : 1 ROFL an entire point drop in compression from stock.
Props if you can find a trade.

errr...if i didn't mention its a ls
BTW just trying to get it back to stock! He's getting a new (00-01) Prelude next Feburary

Yuck, I hate cleaning all those greezy parts. It is worth it though. I can't believe the price of heavy duty rods and pistons.
It might be a good idea to take digi cam pictures of the motor at different stages and they'll be there if you need them.
I'm shopping for a long block b18c right now. Someone told me I can get a short block new for like $2300 , maybe even a type R short block. I kinda just want a JDM low mile motor though.

Okay, so we started this last night...autozone was closed so we didn't have time to pickup a helms/haynes manual :/ So we went in hoping for the best and heres what we got:
We started by removing the front bumper (has to be replaced) and we only had trouble w/ONE bolt w/which we ended up having to drill out and waste 30 mins or so on. And the metal guard that I guess is used for impact is bent to hell...

thats my friend hacking away at it...
So we get that done and then move onto removing hoses/bolts from the engine:

There's me being a dumbass and trying to remove the nuts off the intake manifold from the back
Boy was it a bitch:

So we give up on that idea and remove what we can and go underneats and remove the rests of the nuts, disconnect the headers from the cat and remove the exhaust manifold...so many damn hidden nuts
to be we didn't have the manual...so we get the headers out and here is what we find:

HOLY S**T theres a hole in the block! And those rods/pistons are chewed to sh*t...well its now 3:30am and we can't fell our arms/back anymore:

YEAH THE CLOCK SAYS 3:30AM
so should we clean up or wait for tomorrow to work on it...

Ehh...those tools look happy where they are
Anyway so were going to pickup a manual tomorrow before we complete take out the intake mani to make sure we dont screw anything up (wasn't coming out nicely) and need to figure out how to remove the block from the head/trans...I'd post more but its now 4:46am and I can barely stay awake -_-
If anyone has any tips for us let me know!

what made the hole? usually it means that something (rod) blew through it. if thats the case then obviously youre gonna need more than just a block, or is it due to an accident? you can take off the head without takin off the IM. Once you get a manual you'll save yourself a lot of time. good luck.
NEVER work under a car that is supported by just a jack. Always put jackstands under. You're just asking for an accident to happen like that.

Thats a jackstand in the last picture
Not that dumb. That jack is just sitting there because we're lazy

The rod blew b/c the car was run w/no oil...what else do you think could be broken? Everything seemed to be fine outside of the block itself.

And? 3 stands support 3 tons, last time i check tegs aren't that much. We have 4 jackstands in that garage, this theard wasn't a "lets learn how to use jackstands" but thanks anyway.

Yeah they're all bunched in little groups right now, the color of them helps diferencate them
Anyone here have any experience w/haynes manuals? I can get them at a local autozone around here...Would they be as helpful as the helms?
