Default gsr oil consumption

i have a 94 gsr pretty much stock except for the stage 3 clutch and aem cold air intake. i've notice the lately alot of oil consumption? nothing is leaking and my car isn't smoking until i hit vtec? i believe that it may be a slight possibility that the head gasket may be leaking from internally. i've whipped the exhaust sut, but it doesn't smell like oil. thanks for the help everyone.

Try switching to regular motor oil if you are using synthetic. I had this problem and switched back to Castrol GTX and put in some Rislone Ring Sealer at my last oil change and it hasn't hardly burned a drop.

Good luck

do a compression test and a leakdown test, that will tell you where you're having the problem. as mentioned before, try switching to conventional and see if that helps. you might want to try a search on this too and read up on other guys who had this problem.

Mine was doing that too when I was running mobil-1 syn. I heard most gs-r do burn some oil but if you're going through alot of it then I would have it checked out. Do you go into vtec alot? If so that could be 1 reason

My friends gs-r was burning oil like crazy, as much as a quarte every 2-3 weeks. He took it to Acura and they couldnt figure out what was wrong, replaced piston rings, yadda yadda and it still burned oil. So they gave him a new motor for free.

valve guides or vavle seals leak a lot too, not just the rings to Acura for not replacing those...maybe they were lazy. I burned oil when I was using full synthetic, now I run high milage oil and it seems to be fine thus far.

I fall into this category too now. '00 GSR w/ 62k miles, daily beaten. Started burning oil where it never did before. Always used Mobile 1 sythentic. Blah.

When was the last time you changed your PCV valve?

I have a 94gsr and I don't add a single drop of oil in between oil changes (every 3000 miles).

BUT I did burn oil on two occassions, when I used synthetic oil once, had to add almost a whole qt. in between oil change No thanks for me, went back to regular convetional oil. My other time was when I drove 4 hours each way on a trip. I recently switched to the high mileage oil my last two oil change and it's still fine, no problems yet.

same here, '97 GSR, 106k miles now, had problems since around 70k. Used Mobil 1 10w30 and 5w30 after break-in, up until 90k miles or so when I switched back to conventional 10w30... still burned oil, switched to 20w50. Still burning 1qt every ~800mi. Compression test = , 185, 180, 160, 155, or something like that.

Why in the hell would you go from synthetic back to regular? That's a no no.

Because, the molecules in synthetic oils are much more uniform (and smaller I believe) ... while the molecules in dino oils are of varying sizes. Some of the larger molecules in dino oils 'plug up', if you will, the passages that the smaller molecules could leak out through.

Haven't you ever heard of folks switching from dino oils to synthetics, and then having problems with oil leaking? It seems that this has been discussed many times on the different Honda/Acura boards that I frequent. Maybe you just never heard about it.

I'm sure someone else who has more technical insight into it can elaborate.

VTEC engines are known to burn about 1/2 quart every 3000 miles.

Run your fingertip inside the tailpipe and see if it's oily. A normal running motor should have a dry black residue in the pipe. If it's hard to get off your skin and greasy, you know where your oil is going. Compare the exhaust pipe deposits to that of a known good car and you'll see what I mean.

Oil in the exhaust system will also destroy a cat converter.

Integras just burn a little oil in vtec...so if you constantly drive in vtec and beat on it, you will go through a qt or even 2 in 3000 miles....i have this condition with outstanding compresion at 99k. 230,235,240,235
