Engine oil overfilled? Need help quick!
If anyone is still awake...
Took the ITR for it's first oil change today along with some nagging BS warranty work. I checked the oil tonight while rotating my "holy crap that's soft tread" Bridgestones, and the level sure looks to be ABOVE the top whole on the dipstick. I'm thinking that when I reminded the dolts at the dealer that the ITR has a capacity of 4.2 quarts that the guy may have actually PUT 4.2 quarts in it, meaning I have almost 4.5 in there now.
Does that top whole represent a true 4.2 quarts? The manual as usual is ambiguous. If it's overfilled I have to go back to the dealer in the morning and kick them in the *** before the NOPI show.

How far is it over the line? It shouldnt be too bad if it is over by 1/2 quart. If your really worried about, go out and drive the R really hard until you burn some of the oil away. I dont think its that big of a deal, as long as they didnt fill it with 5 quarts.
if its just over the top hole its ok.......
the manual isnt very precise they say anywhere between the bottom hole and top hole is adequate.

The top hole represents FULL. Not overfull, not underfull - just full. This is your optimal oil level.
The bottom hole represents underfull by one quart. The car can be operated without problem if it's down (underfull) by less than a quart, but you should add oil when you get a chance..
You can tell how far overfull or underfull a car is by using the distance between the holes as a measurement, and extrapolating.
This is true on all cars.
As noted in that other thread, if you're over or under by 1/4 or 1/2 quart, don't worry about it. I think 3.5 mm is somewhere in there.

3.5mm over will be fine. The Uk race teams run at 4mm over to prevent oil surge on corners stopping the VTEC engaging...I ran every mile with mine at 4mm over, including several trackdays and never had a problem.
Glen.

Thanks guys. I had some of the more mechanically inclined guys look at it at the show today and the general agreement was that it should be fine (it's probably 4 or 5 mm over). I just don't have the patience to go back to the dealer right now, plus it was late and I had been detailing the car and I got in a panic and I didn't do a search. Time for a beer.
heh,
like everyone else said, don't worry about it.
I overfilled mine by 1/2 qt when I changed to spoon magnetic drain plugs and was a little worried. But I burned that off really quick with a trip to tgp.

We went up to Deal's Gap yesterday and I drove the ***** out of her, and everything seems fine. Trunks did say he saw a little blackish smoke come out of my tailpipe when I really got on it once, but I figure that's just what happens when you run down DG mostly in 2nd gear between 7000 and 85000 rpm. Can't wait to head back up there after the weather cools off!
