What the ****!? My B16 w/S1 tranny sits at 5,500 RPMS at 70mph in 5th gear!! I love the short gearing, but this tranny needs a 6th gear! What do you all do for highway driving? I can't imagine driving for more than 20minutes at that RPM, for the strain on the engine and the strain on my ears!
Are earplugs the only answer?!
One more thing, my car idles at 3000 RPMs when cold and 1800 RPMs when it warms up. Is it possible my aftermarket tachometer is reading incorrectly? What RPM are you S1 guys running at 70mph and what do you idle at? (I have a VDO tach)

At 70 mph your rpm should be like 4100 or so. But anyways, yes, highway driving does suck with a b16/S1 combo. I usually just speed up, and then coast, speed up, then coast. Don't know if it really helps, but I do it anyways.
the j1 is just as bad buddy. get used to it. i gotta travel 3.5 hrs to college like that! yeh...might do some 5th gear swappin...over the summer
Does ANYBODY have more info on swapping to an LS 5th gear, as in what I would need? I definitely want to do this as I just got a job that requires about 20 minutes of highway driving per day!
yeah how good with cars do you have to be to be able to do this 5th gear swap...imean i put motor in my car u think i can put a ls 5th gear in?
I believe that it's the kind of thing you can do if you have a lot of time and do everything carefully and very, very methodically. But if you mess up one little thing it just isn't going to work right.

you could run some taller tires. like if your on 16's run some 205 45 16 or if on 15's try out some 205 55 15's a lil taller tire helps and is a hella of lot easier to do than swapping trannies or FD's

with an S1 at 70mph, you should be higher than 4100rpm.

Well maybe you guys are right.... when I'm at about 100 kmh I'm at 4000 RPM, so whatever that is in miles I don't know. I'm just going by the link in my signature.
You also have to consider when you calculate rpms at a given speed the tire size affects it as well, so some ppl may be at 4500 while others are at 5k.

if you have a JDM B16 trans and what an LS 5th gear...
parts you will need:
90-91 LS 5th counter gear
90-91 LS 5th main gear
if you have a USDM YS1 GSR trans (like myself) and want a GSR or LS 5th gear...
parts you will need:
94+ LS or GSR counter gear
94+ LS or GSR main gear
its that simple. the only parts needed to replace a 5th gear in a b-series trans are the MAIN and COUNTER 5th gears. the 5th gear is at the top of the gear stack on both the main and counter shafts inside the trans. i suggest that anyone interested in doing this use your HELMS manual ( http://www.helminc.com ). swap at your own risk. it is not hard to swap your 5th gear but you can still mess something up if you dont know what you are doing.

its nice having the entire 92+ b-series gears to choose from (just in case
). i intended to have a 94 GSR 5th gear but instead was sent an ITR 5th which basically lowered my revs by like 70rpms. woot!
its a good trans with "ITR" gearing and before the member on here could source JDM parts, it was the only trans worth having IMO because it can be rebuilt.

you couldn't have said it best, with that tranny you'll have no problems with gear selection, or parts when it's time for a rebuild! i'm going to drop a 94+ ls fifth gear in it, and be the end of october i'll drop in a quaife lsd!

100kmh is like 62mph I believe. And I have a J1 and yes the gearing is short and it sucks on the highway specially when I have to drive 2hr home from college with a big *** whole in my exhaust. But for the city and the streets its pure pleasure and fun, but I swear I can see my gas needle droping in the cluster when I'm on the turnpike.
It sounds like you have the same 5th or same gearing as my tranny.?
..... That would mean you have a 1.000 5th gear hehehe
.
Look in my signature for my tranny spec's
