idle surges after throttle body change
my throttle body off of my d16a6 was very sticky, so i got another throttle body and replaced it. the new throttle body i got didnt have the TPS or gasket around the TPS, so i moved my old TPS onto the new throttle body. well after the install, the throttle was very smooth, but the idle surges anywhere from 700rpms-1200rpms. as soon as i come to a complete stop, the idle stays around 1200rpms and takes a while to drop to 700 - then it starts surging up and down.
would this be caused by the TPS gasket not being there? what about the intake manifold/throttle body gasket? i dont have that gasket in there as well. what would cause this surging and how can i fix it?
thanks

Get both gaskets installed. I've been told that the TPS gasket DOES make a difference. I've always been told that TPS's need to be calibrated. But you DEFINATELY need a throttle body to Intake Manifold gasket. When you pulled it apart the first time, did it leave chunks of gasket on the flange? If it did, then you have major air leaks which could mess up the idle. Pull it apart, use a gasket scraper to get rid of all the old crud, and put on a new t-body gasket and TPS gasket.
alright thanks for the advice. but i was told by honda that they only sell the TPS gasket only with the throttle body and TPS. is there a way to make this gasket? how would i do it?
thanks
thanks
i never knew that there even was a gasket between the tps and the t-body... but like Mr. S said, you should definately get the t-body to intake manifold gasket on there... it's like a buck and a quarter at a parts store, but they will probibly have to order it...
anyway, i ordered a new throttle body and got it bored over by jg about a month ago. When i got it back and installed it, mine did the same thing, well actually now that i think about it, it would kinda steadily get up to about 1,500 or 1700 rpm's and then stall back to the normal idle speed really quickly...
to make a long story short, i just adjusted the idle speed screw and got it to calm down a bit... i let it run for a little while and took it down the road and it was fine...
so maybe if the t-body hasn't been on a car for a while, the little diaphrams get stuck and it won't work right? i've got no clue, but mine worked itself out by the end of the day, the only problem that i've had with it since then is that i set the idle too low when i was trying to fix that, and if it gets too warm it almost dies... but if i would just quit being lazy i could fix that in five minutes
hope that helps (i don't think it will)

Yea TPS's suck.. we should blow them all up. I dont have the gasket between my TPS and throttle body and I havnt noticed a particular problem. My idle is damn low (500rpm) but I think its cuz I have my TPS set at .495v at idle.. I need to adjust it up .005 more and try and have it exactly at .5v.
I also agree that you should def get the TB/IM gasket before anything. If that doesnt fix your surging idle try adjusting the idle screw like jchxcrx did. I had a surging idle problem (caused by spraying carb cleaner in the TB to clean it up) and I drove the car around for a week and my problem is 100% gone now.

that too, the carb cleaner deal... i know that when i got my t-body back from JG that it smelled like parts cleaner really bad, so maybe that all just had to burn out... who knows?
