95 Prelude H23 vs. 2001 Civic SOHC....HELP!
My friend wants to race me for braggin rights and a little cash. I own a 95 Lude ( I posted pics of it a week ago) the engine is completely stock w/ 120k miles. His mommy bought him a 2001 Civic that was previously owned by some dude who did some nice exterior work but the engine is stock and he has a cat-back exhaust. I looked under his hood and saw a SOHC VTEC D-series...I think it said D17a...but it was dark so I couldn't see very well. My question is, who should win the race?.....if we are equally good with the clutch. I know my H23 is 160 hp and I think his is 140 or so..
Dude, you should beat him without a doubt. The H23 motor is pretty fast. I ran a high 15 second quarter mile stock with 157K miles.
You should have no problem.
You should have no problem.
I'm 18...with a lot of 5spd experience...and he is 16 with maybe 4 mos. experience.....plus I don't even think he knows to shift at high rpm...he'll probably shift as quick as he can.
Torque owns JOO!
Unless you mis-shift, run out of gas, start in 2nd gear, or God himself strikes you down....you should be able to walk him nicely.
*edit* Talk him into putting down more money...

Are you serious??? Even if you shift at 5k you should be able to beat him. Your friend pretty much has a mid to high 16 sec car. yours should be high 15s
my girlfriend drives an 02 civic lx and i drive a 93 vtec.
i've never driven an H23 myself but i have no doubt in my mind that you will beat him, hell I'll put money on it!
that is, unless you drive like my girlfriend

I'll tell him to put down 10 bucks...if he wants to try again....then it will be more. He only has a cat-back...and he's not an import retard...so I can't see why he thinks he can win. I knew I had him...I just wanted reassurance from you guys. Thanks
*How much of a difference does my DOHC have over his SOHC?...just more torque right?*
I knew my friend was keeping something from me. I told him I was going to look under his hood again before we raced and he was like "no, no, no" and I was like "yeah". He told me that he is getting ceramic headers and an injen cold air intake put in. He said that the guy at the shop said it should bring him to 215 hp...which I said was bs I/H/E.....130hp stock .....plus maybe 35hp....but the combination of catback and headers might make an extra gain. Now who thinks it would be a close race?
id still go for it , i mean im guess approx 10 to 14 hp from a header and anywere form 7 to 11 hp from a cool air the most he'd prob. jump would be 25 to 30 hp. . . . . thats still right close to your current , ( of course none of this is to the wheels obviously) but still, hes not gaining alot of bottom end torque from these mods either , that H23 has hella pull on it man , and even though he's light weight, it'd still be a close race . . i'd still go with tryin to get him off the line and maybe discourage him from pushing too much longer . . . or hell why dont you do some mods yourself . . . .the topic of this thread was 2001 civic vtec vs your lude . . . but now the games changed, bolt some **** on and dont be worried about it . .
my friend has a 93 or 94 civic ex, 5sp with that SOHC vtec motor, We both had exhaust and intakes, I SMOKED HIM, we raced at a light, I didn't even launch, he did, by second gear I was halfway past him and never looked back
