i got a 91 ls and im plannin to do an ls vtec but my motor has 155k mileage on it. should i go with the ls vtec conversion or just get a new 30k b16a1 motor. which one would u guys go for? keep the old b18a motor and convert to ls vtec or just get the whole b16a1. thanks

just go b16, but LS/vtec is not reliable. do searches on LSVTEC, there's topic on this every week.

ls/vtecs are very reliable when done right, if your doing the work yourself though, and have little car knowledge, id recomend getting the b16 or haveing a good mechanic that has done ls/vtecs do the swap for you

if u don't have alot of money consider a b20. with the money that is left over u can invest in cams, intake, header, cat or exhaust. and get it tuned. i wouldn't go with the b16 because it has no torque the least amount of torque out of all the b series engines.

u can find a longblock from a junk yard with low miles for around 800. install could be done at your house because it is a direct swap. switch over the intake manifold and exaust manifold and it slides right in. two day project. but most likely you'll have a shop do it which will end up the same price as ls/vtec. what are your power goals? using for drag or autox?

my goal is just basically have a daily driven car with no problem as well as with some powers. the b20 gots some power n torque then i can just put some bolts on and cams. if not, u think i should go with the b16a1 for daily driven or b20.

i have a b16 in my 91 teg and what people say about the torque is true.
the bottom end really sucks u have to rev it to get any power. i'm still slightely faster than an ls. u would be a lot happyer with an ls vtec if u can afford it. the b16 sucks for dayly driving cuz of the lack of torque but the top end is ok much better than an ls on the top end.

Is the b20 a JDM engine ? Or what USDM honda has it as an engine?

there are usdm and jdm for the b20.
97 – 98 B20B 126hp@5400rpm 133ft-lbs@4300rpm 8.8:1
99 - 00 B20Z 140@6200rpm 133ft-lbs@4500rpm 9.6:1

so i should just get the b20 and still use my ls head. would that be good, cuz my engine is at 156000 mileage. or just drive the b20 until get enough money then go b20 /vtec.

i would do ls vtec my block mileage is high at 156k. thats why i rather just get the b20's then do b20/vtec later on.

i think you should just save up a little more and get maybe a b18c. since you are only using this for daily driving. I always believe doing things right the first time and hopefully only one time.

I bought my 94 gsr head w/ 90,xxx miles on it from a friend for 550, paid a friend 800 to do it, including parts and labor. id say its worth it. ls/vtecs are as reliable as they are built. built well, without cutting corners or cheaping out, it will be as reliable as whatever else. if you cheap out, dont expext it to last another 100k. basically, if youre gonna do it, do it right.
