Cam gears slipping.............?
I know there are a few members i.e-non-vtec who had his tensioner, cam gear slip.....causing major damage to the head. How can one permently safeguard against this happening? Do I tighten the gears themselves or the crancase tensioner?
use a lock-tite. but there is a very VERY slim chance of a cam gear slipping tho

use cam gears with as many bolts as you can find... dont use the cheap AEM ones that have 3 or 4, get the ones that have 5 bolts on them.. it will hold better and make sure they are on tight!
i never accualy seen any cam gears slip weather it's 3 bolts or 10. but personally i feel that if a cam gear slips it's because the tuner did not tighten the bolts enough. i had AEM 3 bolt cam gears and they never slipped. if you want to feel more confortable get skunk2 gears with 6 bolts.
DC Sports relesed new adjustible cam gears as well with i think 6 bolts. Toda and crower has 4 bolts and they both look very good.
my cam gears never slipped. it was a tensioner problem that caused the hell i went through........

what about them?! non-vtec didnt have a gear slip, and FUCATYPR's friend had a guy advance a gear too much. thats not slipping. like i said...its rare. the aems will be fine.i've had them for about 2 years. on my LS..them took them off and put them on my gsr. even if one bolt was lose...u'd still be ok because of inertia effect. slipping gears is most likely install error!

My mechanic had the valves bent on my GSR with Toda B specs.
We think the AEM (2 yrs old) Cam gears slipped .
I have very stiff valvesprings (Portflow/ITR) so we think that may have something to do with it.
I had heard of a few people saying their AEMs slipped, but lots of people saying they didn't. I now have a set of the 6 bolt Skunks...
The AEMs were def torqued down, it may be a combination of their wear and the stiffness of the valvetrain.
To take it out of the eqn, I got the Skunks, so I can finally get the car back
Todas also look very nice, and are prob better for adjusting due to the type of markings/scale... I've never heard of Todas or Skunks slipping.
You can def use loc-tite, that should help Halo...

it was a tensioner problem that caused the hell i went through........
the problem i had was not directly the fault of the tensioner. it did not come loose or break or anything like that. it was a stupid mistake i made when i had the cylinder head at the machine shop and told them to mill it .040-.045 (i forgot the exact ammount) well the much taken off the head resulted in the timing belt never being "tight enough" because the tensioner was tensioned all the way and would not take up any more belt slack.
it was only a matter of time before it was going to slip. between the stiff valve springs and the timing belt getting stretched over time that the belt would eventually slip. (yes the timing belt stretches over time)
just a word of advice. do not mill your cylinder head to increase compression more than .030 MAX!!
