Squeek in the GSR :(
For the past while I have been hearing this squeek in the GSR from the engine bay area. I have a 99 GSR. I notice it only when I sit idling. It sounds just like a belt squeeking, but I found out that right when I push the clutch in the sound disappears. When I release the clutch it is right back. This happens maybe 50% of the time I idle. Very freaking annoying. It must not be a belt then. Someone please help me out. Something to lube...ERRRRRR
If its clutch related, I'd put my money on the throw out bearing.. but check your belts first. If its not the release bearing, it might be the bearings in the tranny (had to have mine replaced at 55K miles).
Mine sounded like almost grinding a metal knife against a metal plate or something... engage and disengage the clutch. I would hear a faint *clack* then the sound would come back when I let go of the clutch pedal..

Agreed, it's a fairly common problem.

I get a really low pitch whistle noise, I have a feeling it's a belt. I brought it to acura once about it and they tightened up my alt. belt and it went away. But low and behold it's back. They didn't charge me to tighten it so I'm not gonna bitch about it

Same with mine, but Acura wants me to authorize a tech to look at it then they are going to determine if its warrantable ?? If its not then I have to pay the $300 plus dollars just to look at it, then I need to decide if I want them to do it. Which means more money.
They told me something like "if they find that the vehicle has been driven aggressivly, such as hot spots on the cluth or something like that, they are not going to warrenty it". Now I don't even drive the car hard anymore. I wonder if I shold just have them look at hit and have my mechanic look at it if I have any problems. They also think its the throw out bearning.
If you barly put you foot on the clutch and it goes away thats what I'd say is the problem.

Yea I can just barely touch teh clutch and it goes away. If that means it is the throw out bearing, how much would I be looking at for the fix? It sounds common in manual transmisions...

It's pretty easy to take out the tranny and check the condition of the throw out bearing if you have a few tools and a place to do the job....
I would buy a manual and give it a shot if you can have the down time with your car....
If you follow the manual it should be able to come apart and go back together in a day... at the longest a weekend!
It doesn't make sense to pay someone 300 plus dollars to look at a part that costs about 25...
Have faith and a little patients and you should be able to do it and not get raped by the damn flat raters at the dealership...
BTW if your a dealership mechanic reading this... no offense but you know what you charge and how much it really should cost
I am a flat rater myself

The throwout bearing runs around $45. You dont have to pull the motor, just drop the tranny. While you are down there, you might want to go ahead and check the condition of the clutch and get that replaced (or upgraded) at the same time. For the DIY'er, its no too bad, no special tools needed really...
Yea I was telling my dad about the problem earlier and he was asking if there is anything else I should go ahead and replace while I was in there, if we did it ourselves or if we took it to a shop. No problems w/ gears grinding so I think syncros are good. When we do it I would probably switch clutch too since the car does have 50k miles.
i just noticed a similar problem yesterday, when i back up and let off the clutch i hearing a knife going against a plate sound too, but it sounds like its coming from the right rear which there is blown shock there too HMMMMMMMMM
