Default Spec Miata cage in 4 days!

Mike Quan and I just completed this today and I thought I'd share it with you all!
We made good use of Mike's new Miller 175 welder as well as my Miller plasma cutter to get the job done in this time frame.
See this link for more pics. http://homepage.mac.com/rogerf....html

yo rog. dang that looks sweet. wanna do mine? you busy man... heheh. i think we should still finish the delly for some ITS records. some crack junkie broke my driver's side window 2 weeks ago, and stole my spark plug wires (only thing missing! weird.) so now the car is ready for some nascar door bars.

This cage is made completely out of 1.50"x.120" dom SAE 1020 "tubing". I use a JD Squared bender for the task. Material generally runs approx. $4 a pound.
Pipe is for plumbing.

Too bad the pics don't show how tough the forward bars were to do. The bends are in three different planes. I can't remember, did you get a pic with the hardtop on? This car has about 3"- 4" of headroom more than mine.

Frank,
The Foo knows his stuff. He knew what he wanted to do but had to explain it to me.

The windshield header would have been closer (to the windshield) but the hardtop has a built up part that needs to fill that space.

You can't tell from the pics but the doorbars press up against the panels.

Frank... just ask Mike if you can go look at his brother in law's cage. It's less than an hour away from you. Pics won't do it justice.

Can I possibly get a closeup pic of how the seat frame is mounted and what kind of seat/bracket combo it is ?

I have a momo start seat on OEM rails in the Miata but I'm about an inch higher than I'd like to be.

It was good to see you during OTC

Thanks

I will try to get some pics of the seat mount & the top on this weekend. No time now.

The front rail of the seat was beat down so that the factory 'nuts' were verticle. 3/4" round tubing is welded to the bracket & used as a spacer. In the rear left side, a piece of 1" X 2" tubing has a nut welded in it. The tubing is welded to the side rail (sill) & the floor. Note that there is a rail under the car approx. 1/3 of the way into the seat area. The tubing terminates there. On the rear inboard side, a piece of plate & 3/4" round tubing with a nut welded in make up the fourth attachment point.

Thanks guys! Mike did most of the difficult work. I was just there trying to help.

Chad, I'll be in Atlanta some where around May 13th loading the trailer and heading north to Mosport. I guess that means I'll be on the east coast for about 3 weeks, 2 weeks too long!

Sarwat, OTC was a blast! I met alot of enthusiastic drivers and had my share of crappy food to last me a whole year. It was also real interesting driving the BMW 330ia past the limits! Funny as hell actually!

uhh...yeah, right!

You guys remember the crewing threads from last year. In them I said that even crewing for free can pay big dividends. You can learn a ton about tactics, mechanicals, etc by working for/with experienced people. If you do the job well for good people, they will in turn often be willing to help you out.

Understand what I am saying here....?

which is why i always recommend newbies to find someone and just crew for them first before thinking about starting out in racing.

Hey Roger, nice win.

I saw some complaining about you on the OTC board. but i think your boy made a point when he pointed out the whole idea of OTC was to get a chance to run against the best!

and i thought it was hilarious when he added this...

"We had a pro on our team, Roger Foo. We paid him in fast food for the week. We slept three to a room so our motel expenses didn't increase. In other words, Roger was about a $150-$200 "mod"."

hahaha.

i like the cage. it's pretty. and it looks like it fits well.

i think i'm gonna end up getting the autopower, too.

free time hanging out at the track making friends always ends up as free time at the mall holding bags with the girlfriend.

but i'm also considering running topless. maybe a custom made oversized cage is what i need. something with more head clearance that doesn't need to fit with the top.

***
Hey Frank! what made you decide to get into SM?? You bought a Miata right after me and Tam did. With your Honda experience I figured you would run your del slow or eg in Honda Challenge!

all that seat time in all that exotic machinery, and you bought a girl car?? i mean...ANOTHER girl car?? Heh.
