Custom Piping and 2 1/2" Muffler
I went to a local muffler shop and they said 2 1/2" Custom piping from my cat to muffler will cost $90. I am wondering if that is a good price? I am looking for a 2 1/2" Muffler now. I saw some magna flow but am looking for apexi or 5zigen. anyone know what muffler i can get that is 2 1/2"?
thanks

Since I've been gong thru the same quest as you, here is what I have found. Most JDM manufacturers only produce universal cans in 2.25" or 3". The cat-backs always seem to be 60mm(2.35" I think).
Currently Magnaflow, Dynomax, and Thermal all make 2.5" oval cans. Any of these will work. Magnaflow does make a 7" round 2.5 inlet/outlet can similar to a N1 style. It isn't listed under their universal can collection, but Dave at SMS assured me they have one. Dave is a Magnaflow dealer and can answer most of your questions if your interested < smsproducts@carolina.rr.com >.

A muffler shop will give you something that is crush bent. It will have a significant reduction in tubing diameter in the bends. Maybe, I'll bend a 2-1/2" 90 in a crush bender this Saturday and Chris can take some pictures comparing it to the mandrel bent 90 that we'll use on his car. So, to answer your question, yes for crush bent 2-1/2" piping $90 is an OK price. Now, if the bends happen to be smaller than a stock R's mandrel bent 2-1/4" the question becomes will it be worth it? You'll just have to try it and see.
As for mufflers here is some flow information that was on the Magnaflow box for Chris' 2-1/2" muffler that we'll be using. Granted, you can take this with as many grains of salt as you like, these are the numbers that Magnaflow advertises on the box and I have not seen any official test reports but it states that the tests were conducted at 28" of vacuum. O/O means offset-offset, O/C means offset-center and C/C means center-center with respect to the inlet and outlet locations.
Size Config p/n flow in cfm
2-1/4 O/O 11235 490
2-1/2 O/O 11236 511
2-1/2 C/O 11226 549
2-1/2 C/C 11216 557
Carsound has told me that a 94006 should flow about 400 cfm under the same conditions. We'll be using the 11226 on Chris' car it is a 4"x9" with a 14" long bodu and 3" long inlet and outlet tubes. It is a straight through design except there is a slight bend in there due to the C/O configuration which I hope helps to quiet it down a little versus a C/C.

I'm in the same boat as you guys. I'm looking for a straight-thru 2.5" catback, but they're kind of scarce. Would anyone be interested in a "groupbuy" of 2.5" mandrel bent piping? I haven't been able to find a single shop in KC that has a mandrel bender. If we could find a shop to mandrel bend a couple of pipes, we could probably get a decent price.
The last time I had a custom exaust made, it rusted to hell and that was in CA. Don't forget the fact that your stock exhaust is of higher quality. Use stanless if possible but otherwise, I rather get a pre-fab one from Mugen, Comptech, or even Greddy.

As you know I'm looking into building a system or having one built to my specs. To build a custom system from 304L stainless from mandrel bent 45s and 90s is very expensive due to all the waste of material. I can't be specific on this board but the material alone would be in the neighborhood of the retail cost of a decent 304L 60mm made in Japan system, plus labor. Although it would be a very nice set up, I'm not sure if you guys want to spend that much for a system so the next idea is to have one built to my specs. The problem with this is I have to buy at least 25 systems at a time and that's alot of capital to have sitting in inventory for a shop of my size. I still don't have any idea of what the cost would be for a 2-1/2" system made to my specs, but I'm sure it would be somewhat more than the 60mm systems out there and it wouldn't have any bottle necks in it and would probably come with an extremely good warranty. More later.
I think you better get moving...hehehehe
I don't think you would have a problem selling a boat load of 2.5" on this board alone...I have seen quite a few posts of people wanting to buy one

Go with Hitechs 2.5" Exhaust. Last time I spoke to John it should be released in about 4 or 5 weeks and will be a SS Full Cat back system with the 2.5 all the way through even through the muffler, Its a twin loop design like Mugens and will be about $600
Yes john told me 2-3 months ago it would be about 1000, but just a week ago, he told me that it would be in an area closer to most exhausts and he quoted me $600 so i am sure he will keep it in that area.
How does it look, like a piece of artwork, There were some pics posted once here but i cant find them, if i can get some i will post them up.

I know it could not be too significant if at all, but I wonder how much that 360 degrees of bends slows exhaust gas velocity. I guess I could call HiTech and ask them if they will make a straight N1-style canister back-section too. Yes I know I'm splitting the hairs off a fly's abdomen. But I bet that exhaust will sound wicked...
hey lyonel , nice exhaust, where and how muh did it cost? just curious. I am looking for an exhaust also that has a 2.5 piping. i'd really appreciate any thoughts
Installation of headers, cross-member modification, mandrel piping and muffler install.... converted to US dollars it's around $345.
*sigh* our dollar is so weak

that's a pretty nice setup...does having the resonators that close to each other hurt/benefit performance at all? Did you consider not having resonators at all? Let me know as I'm looking to do the same kind of thing, I would like to know your opinion on how it turned out.
