I think I screwed up my wheel bearing - come point and laugh!
While changing my tire, I broke a wheel stud, so I looked for my repair manual, but couldn't find it. I figured I'd tackle the project cold.
I took off the caliber, removed the disk, and found that you can't get the wheel studs on without removing the hub.
My neighbor, who is a bit more savvy than I, suggested that I remove the hub by spinning the really big nut (1" or 1 1/4") counter-clockwise.
Well, I did that, and I managed to spin it.
It didn't feel right, so I came in here to find out how to do it right.
When I found out I needed to either cut the shield and trim the studs, or remove the hub with a special tool, I decided to call it quits and let a shop handle it. It's too cold outside for this ****.
Anyhow, I put it all back together and tried to go for a ride, and now I am getting this hideous grinding noise from the affected wheel.
The sound is not affected by engine speed or brakes. It increases in volume and pitch with the velocity of the vehicle.
I'm guessing that it's the wheel bearing. I probably torqued the hell out of it when I spun that big nut.
Sound right? Just how dumb was that ...

Well if you were spinning it counter clockwise you were taking it off...btw it's called the axle nut. I would tighten it back on before you go driving.

It's Caliper, not Caliber.
Also even with the axel nut off you need a press to push out the hub anyway, I don't think you can do it with hand tools that I know of.

nope. didn't touch the axle. vehicle was jacked up at all times.
ok, so maybe I need to look up a diagram.
in any event, it seems unlikely that I damaged the wheel bearing or axle.
When I turned the axle nut, it didn't feel like the nut was turning smoothly. It just didn't seem right. It was like the axle itself was turning, but I'll have to verify that. I'll also make sure the axle nut is back tightly.
Anything else?

Just so you know I highly doubt you over torqued the nut in question, even though it has absolutly nothing to do with the sound you are hearing that bolt is supposed to be torqued to 130ft/lbs.

Well ... I did not break the axle nut loose.
When it turned, I must have turned the entire axle. My best uneducated guess is that I damaged the spindle or wheel bearing.
Next purchase will have to be a service manual...
For now, it is at the shop for more qualified repairs.

Before you go buy ANYTHING else, just take it to a shop n let them find out exactly whats wrong with it before you buy a whole lotta **** you dont need.
Get someone to look at it, there is no way you turned the entire axle if the wheel did not move. You would have to rip all the splines apart Mr. Muscles.

good thought - I didn't manipulate the dust shield at all, but here's to hoping it's a simple fix

done - but just for the record, all I have purchased is the replacement wheel stud and lug nut, so I'm ok on that account.

We'll see what happened when they replace the wheel stud

My vote's on the dust shield... those things are within 5 mm stock, any movement and they'll rub and make horrible noises.
so autozone gave me the wrong wheel stud. very annoying.
in any event, the shop fixed the broken stud. The grinding noise was indeed the dust shield. no biggie there.

Thats good you found your problem and it wasn't as bad as you thought. In the future ( hopefully far future), if you want your wheel bearing just jack the front of your car up just to the tires off the ground and wiggle your whole wheel. There shouldn't be any play at all, if there is then your bearing's shot. With have a 10+ year old car it's just something most of us come across eventually
