Default b18c5 vs. built b16a

well i'm really having a hard time deciding on what to do with my crx. currently i have a b16a dropped inside of it and i want to keep my car all motor. i have been trying to decide wether if i should build this b16a.. as in get some pistons rods micropolish the crank and build the head, or just get a ITR block and mate that with the b16a head and just build the b16a head and leave the itr block stock.. i can't decide which would be a better bottom end.. a built b16 or a stock itr.. any thoughts on this guys?

i dont know how much a itr block is or anything but that would be badass to have a ITR in your car...

ITR and B16 block is pretty much the same...only reason for the jump in hp of the ITR is because of the slightly ported head, higher lift cams, better flowing intake. in other words, better headwork. If you want more power on your B16...increase your displacement and compression. 3 ways that I can think of is either put a stroker kit (Toda $$$ or B18/B20 block), get bigger pistons (maybe 82mm or get your block sleeved for 84.5...Either way its gonna cost ya. If you want a B16 block to play with, we have 2 in the shop for cheap...only thing is they're jdm (referree issue)...but if I were u, I'd get a B20 block and mate your b16 head and start from there.

a 1.8 bottom end will do wonders to torque and power . ive driven an ITR powered crx and they are pretty dam fun. in fact im trying to do that right now on mine.

If you are worried about money, i think the biggest bang for your bucks will be the B20vtec. the block is so much cheaper then the ITR but has more displacement, then run that high compression and build the B16 head. Hell you have 2/3 of the stuff i dont have... a b series tranny and the b16 head. I'm currently building (having built) the B20vtec... and i'm biased and all, but i think its the way to go... and potentially cheaper power for you.

I really hope you dont work in that shop b/c you couldn't be any more wrong about the blocks.......The ITR block is more than a little different than a B16 block. The ITR (and CTR, same block) block is 7 mm taller, it also has balanced internals, and better pistons........but you are rite about the headwork.

I would go with the c5 block if you can get a good deal. When going NA there is no replacement for displacement.

of course but imagine if do the same to the b18c5 , it will yield more power + torque right , so theres no replacement for displacement

The C5 head is a bajillion times better than a b16 head. The flow is immense, the tolarances minute, and its built not to be sporty...but for a track minded car. Personally, when anyone asks me what to swap I say "save up for a C5" With bolt ons and a nice exhaust you should have a low 13 sec, if not 13 flat CRX. And all you will ever have to worry about is changing the oil.

Cant beat it.

Why get a $2500 C5 block when you can get a $250 B16 block and spend the rest in new pistons, blueprint and have a few bux left over to spank your C5 block.

The b16 lacks torque, and always will unless you get f/i. Unless you strip the car of useless weight this will be a major con. the B18 has just a little more torque (~35Nm) but it pulls a lot better (driven B18 CRX) equipped with a Y1 transmission than the same car with the B16. If you build a B16 with 11-12:1 CR , cams, exhaust you -might- get close to 200hp at the crank. It will rev like crazy but no power down below!

So get the ITR engine, HKS manifold, HKS downpipe, light flywheel, Skunk2 or Toda cams and if you have some money left resleeve the block to ~1900cc..
Now you're set with at least 200whp and all you ever need in this car!

I'd like the ITR engine as well but it's hard to find one against a decent price, but waged against the price of building an atmosferic B16.. it's a simple choice!

While I agree with you guys...were talking about .2 litres...

Take a 2 litre bottle of soda...cut it in half. then in half, then in half and you'll still have a little more than .2 litres.

The difference between a 18c1 and a 16a is 10 hp and 17 ft/ lbs.

Wooo hooo!! You can buy 2 16a's for the price of a 18C1. Worth it? What is the increase in gains per mod. a couple % greater for the b18 series?

In general there is no replacement for displacement...but when your talking about spending an extra $1700* for 10 hp and 17 ft/lbs??? Who in their right mind would pay that?

When it comes to the C5 though its a different story. The Block, and the head are miles and miles beyond the performance of a 16a.

I was thinking about building a b16, but I came to the realization that it would probably end up costing as much as a ITR engine, and be much less reliable/ durable. My current plan now is an ITR engine in a crx.

If you're interested, we can build the B18 motor that I bought from you and mate your b16 head for an lsvtec motor...we'll work out a price depending on what pistons or set up you want.

I would drop in a B20 bottom end with your B16 head.

, but good luck finding a cheap B20 block. I've been looking for one for a couple of months now and stumbled upon his B18 for cheap...

So, you spend a little more.....in the long run though you have a motor with equal or more power, PLUS it retains stock reliability......a c5 is almost bulletproof. Then you have the displacement which allows for more room for improvement. And last but not least, you have a the honor of owning a novelty engine like the c5......probably one of the finest motors assembled by honda. I think its worth the extra $$$.
