what gas to use?
What are you trying to accomplish by switching octanes? I have heard arguments that it isn't good to switch and that if your manual says to use only regular unleaded you aren't supposed to use higher octane fuel. If you plan on staying with a higher octane and not switching back and forth then go for it, it's your money.
not a waste, i mean the detergent properties of the fuel still do there job of cleaning up alittle but, if your looking for a performance edge....add up the cost of using premium gas for a year, go buy a header, and call it even. You can use it, but the engine is designed for optimum performance on 87 octane rating gasoline. Just avoid the disiel stuff

Octane rating is just the ability to resist knock or detonation. The ls doesn't need it because of it's lower compression. However the gsr is a bit higher, so that is why the manual recommends premium for those. Go as low as an octane you can so long as your car does not detonate. Going higher than your car calls for, will likely do more harm than good.

i have always used 91 never put anything else. i figure i only be paying a dollar more for 10 gallons so i dont mind on the extra dollar. i would this the higher the octane would be better for the engine

ya but am i going to be loosing even the slightest amount of power?

yes, all engines experience build of of deposits. Which is why you should run a bottle of octane booster through it every couple months, or run in one gear lower at all times for a day or two. THe higer rpms will help burn off deposits. since most of us on this site do quite a bit of "spirited" driving, which is actually good sometimes

I actually meant 1-2 more mpg
All I know is that my gas light goes on around 200-210 on 87 and around 230-240 when i use 93.

That's because the knock sensor is probably retarding the timing to compensate for that lower octane fuel. I bet if you ran 91 or 93 octane you would feel a boost in performance because the engine would be able to run at normal timing.
And my fuel light never comes on before 275, sometimes as high as 375 if I drove 100% highway miles on a road trip.

That's just not fair
gsr's get more mpg than ls's?

i have a ls engine and I have been running it with 89 since I got it. NEVER ran it with anything else. For some reason, I thought LS engine prefers 89 octane. What does the manual say?

Youve got to be kidding me. this is a joke right??? this millage sucks pipes.
94 LS, 148K, 87 octane only , and never less then 370 on a tank. Usually 385-400+. And this is with NO fuel light. I have never let it come on so i could probably go further.

how the heck do you guys get that gas mileage? I use 93 octane, and I get 240-250 to a tank and that is with the light on for about 20 miles, I have a 2000 GSR with 43K on it!! Something must be wrong with my car!!
the vtec motors actually get better mpg under normal driving ie not in vtec than the non vtec motors because the non vtec cam blobes are less agressive so less fuel is burned
also a vtec motor will need premium since it has higher compression and more agressive timing

My record is 383 miles on one tank, using 11.3 gallons (33.7mpg). My highest mpg was 300 miles on about 8.3 gallons, or 36mpg.
