I've got a 93 Accord ex auto tranny that is making a mixture of a grinding/whining/two pieces of-metal-rubbing-against-each-other kind of noise when the car goes backwards. I thought at first it was the transmission because it makes the noise when i put it into reverse, but it also does it when the car is in neutral and i am just rolling backwards down a hill. The car also rumbles violently when the car idles in reverse. does this sound like a transmission problem? your input would be appreciated.

 

check your brakes.

 

check your motor mounts for the ruble idle while in reverse

check your rear brakes and replace all worn parts
