hey, guys i'm new. just bought my car recently. question:
my temp gauge never seems to make it past the 1/4 mark. all my other cars have run about half way along the scale.. is this normal? thanks.

they should run between 1/4 and 3/8ths mine runs locked at 3/8ths (205F) at 10.85:1 with the fluidyne. your car is running with stock behavior. I am considering dropping in a mugen thermostat.
When fully warmed up, it should be a bit before halfway.
If your car is consistently running cold during driving, and the needle begins to climb only when sitting in traffic or idleing for a while, your thermostat is most likely toast. Simple replacement, not much at all. Dont waste $50 on a Mugen/Spoon thermostat though...you can get the same thing for less elsewhere.

How about in normal traffic driving and 60% of the time its at just below halfway..... but on the highway at cruising speeds it drops NOTICABLY to 1/4 or a tad less..... and then after slowing down from cruising speeds back to normal traffic it goes back to just below half...
The transistion is slow, its not like really fast or anything, and the car has always normally been at the just below half temp..... only recently have I noticed it gets COLDER when driving on the highway..... strange, no?

not strange at all, the honda cooling system is pretty beefy as far as i can see. the more air you force through the radiator, the more effective your cooling will be. mine does the same thing.

no matter what i do, it doesn't seem to go much above 1/4. it's been pretty cool here, and i've been taking it easy until i can get the valves done/oil change, blah, blah.
anyway, i'm replacing a bunch of stuff and may as well add a thermostat just to be on the safe side.

might as well, it's cheap and preventative maintenance, make sure you line up the little pin on the thermostat....do a coolant flush at the same time....

I'd replace your thermostat just to make sure.
My thermostat broke and stuck open a while back and after a 120MPH run down the HWY it was way BELOW the 0 mark.
We pulled over and there was condesation frost on my intake, and 3 people could put their hands on my valve cover without being burned.

had something similar like this happen in my nissan. Wasnt getting a good reading cause the coolant was alittle low. remove radiator cap and top it off with some water. If the coolant is already full then your probably fine.
