Default More road course Q's...how do I know my RE10's have enough left??

Well, the sides of my RE10's are pretty scuffed up and the tread is pretty low...but there still IS tread. I'm able to still be VERY competitive if not win GS (AutoX) locally still. This is my 2nd year AutoXing on these tires, and I've been on the road course once with them as well (2 hours total track time). I've got just under 8k miles on them.

How do I know they'll be okay for the road course? I have a brand new set of 205/50/15 Pirelli P700Z's ready to be mounted when needed.

Thanks.

I *AM* going to mount my race tires...

to my MAZ-duh Millenia wheels.

I want to bring them along for maybe the 3rd or 4th session.

They should be ready today! All painted yesterday and should be nice and dry ready to mount my R1's.

After I get that taken care of...then the brakes are next. I will be ready!

Let's not have fighting between the dragons.

If the tread bars aren't flat yet - let me know if you don't understand how to check this - then you have enough tread for a two-hour track event. The more important question might be whether you have enough to get to and from the track. If the track is 600 miles away, you're looking at putting another 1200 miles on your tires just getting there and back - if you're close to the treadbars, that could be a problem.

Do you have the new tires on a separate set of wheels that you'll be bringing with you, or will you need to get them mounted and balanced on your current wheels?

Mount the track tires and bring them along.

If you're not down to the treadbars on the RE010, then use them to drive to and from the track. If you're close to the treadbars when you get to the track, just use the track tires on the track, so you have enough tread on the RE010 to get back home.

If they still hold air they are good

I have wear bars all the way around... and still planning on driving it a few miles.
Just depends on how hard you drive. Bring extra wheels (just in case).

If you aren't showing cord, or you don't know that it's showing cord, and it still handles predictably, keep running them

this is Kelly's (who?) philosophy. His tires are *really* low, but it's weird...it's almost as if it stopped wearing out about 4 months ago. Autocrossing on rough concrete/ daily driving should have caused it cord several thousand miles ago, but they just keep going & going & going & ...

yoshi - who thinks Kelly's got some special compound RE010s

When you see cords replace, if not keep driving.

Yes I can understand... I got 45,000 out of my beaters P700Z tires... No more tread block = more contact surface = less wear = more grip

No cords...still some tread bars left. Only thing is my sidewalls are *chunked*. I'm just paranoid because the road course is more dangerous than the AutoX (obviously)!!!

You don't get more grip when you're out of tread; you get less. Especially when cornering. The whole idea of tread is to allow the rubber to "squirm" so it grips the road, particularly when you're cornering.

And, if you encounter any rain, you DEFINITELY want tread.

About the less tread statement and rubber squirm response NSX - Please explain to an ignorant llama how slicks work then? Is it all about the rubber compound at that point?

- an ignorant llama (not trying to be an ***, just need more explanation)

PS - I of course understand why you want treaded tires in rain...

Yes. With slicks, the rubber is so soft that it can squirm without the help of the tread blocks.

I got just 29k miles on my stock RE010s before I decided to swap them for AVS Intermediates, and I bet I could have gotten at least another 3k miles on them. And I used the stockers for 2 road course events and at least 3 autocrosses. So, I had a possessed set of tires too.

I dont know, but frequent rotations (every 1500 miles) and monitoring the air pressure did wonders.

If it's not showing cord, then it's still good in the dry. Remember the less tread, the less flex in the tire. So in a way it's even better. The only problem is that you might have heat cycled them too many times and the rubber may not grip as well. So if the rubber hasn't hardened, it's still good. Think about it the World Challenge cars use tires that have been shaved. Why? b/c there's less flex!

But personally if I have other tires to run on the track, I wouldn't use the 010 at all cause they chunk pretty badly after just a few laps.

If you run your RE010s, put the tire with the most life on the left front and the second best on the right front and stick the crappy ones on the rears... Then, have at it until they cord! Unless it rains...

I thought I read that the Realtime Team SHAVES their all-weather tires to make dry weather tires (slicks). SHAVING would remove the tread, n'est-ce pas?

Shaving removes SOME of the tread, not all of it.

Hey Todd, just to make things "even," you can use my re010's and I'll race on my Blizzaks.

The Bat - who didn't start the smack-talk, but isn't doing much to discourage it.

Todd... running around HPT is less abusive than autocrossing on your tires.

I need to change out a hub on the Neon before I put the car on the track... otherwise I am going to be chasing sub 2:00 laps. (the current SSC lap record is at 1:53 but they don't have a stinkin' chicane!) I have done a 2:00 flat in the Civic once so I know it can be done in the black car.

Hey Jan - are you coming down for the July 7-8 event?? I couldn't tell from your post.

If so, it's always good to see a familiar face Good Luck! Whooohoooo, another track day!

BudMan - who wants to continue the smack talk......Batoutahell, I promise to drive the track with my emergency brake on so you can see my faster lines! (maybe the supercharger will keep up then??)

Budman ~ Ahh...changing your name to protect your identity?! You'll need to after I get done with you on the course! haha. I have some new tricks up my sleeve you don't know about yet...

Batoutahell ~ Well you gotta go faster than the 85 mph speed limit to catch me Batboy! haha.

Not sure about yellowchicken. Albino Dragon can't make it. White Dragon *will* be there though...
