which year distributors are compatable?

need a distributor for a 96 gsr..........will all 96 up distributors work or will the 99 -01 distributors or OBD3 not work?

All I know is that only a 1994-1995 distributor will work for mine, but that is what I was told so I'm really not sure. I need to know the true answer too, since mine is making some serious noise. Thanks.
