tach signal on the distributor to a 97 ls motor
sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum....anyways i was wondering if someone could tell me which wire was the tach signal on my distributor to my 97 ls motor...i'm about to install a shift light and i need to know which wire is which...any info given will be greatly appreciated....thanks, Sal
If you wanna ghetto wire it which I WOULDN'T, you can simply tap it off the blue wire on your distributor... That is the ICM signal... The way I would wire it up is to tap straight off the ECU... I assume you are running a '96-'99 P75 ECU or an OBD1 P74/P75 ECU with jumper... Either way it doesn't matter... You'll probably want to double check me on this since I don't have any of my wiring diagram with me right now but i'm pretty sure the ICM is A20... All you gotta do is "T" your tach signal input from that you and you should be set... Peace
Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't the tach wire out of the distributor drive the tach circuit?, 96-98 or 99. I know later years 2000 and 2001 they use a signal from the ECU (A19-NEP) i believe. I am just missing the part of using the blue wire being ghetto I guess, especially if he has a 96-99 ecu.
Yea there's nothing wrong with doing that... It's actually how I used to wire them when I actually installed tachs and stuff... haha Now i just don't really like them so I haven't had to do one in awhile... Anyways you just tapped off the factory connector right?? It's the blue wire that is capped off by a black rubber plug and it sits by the junction connector on the driverside of a DC/EG wiring harness... You can also find the signal running into the back of your cluster... I'm pretty sure it is the only blue wire but again double check me there... Peace
Actually I ran into a tach problem recently with my swap. The ECU is 97 LS. Motor 2001 B20z. The distributor wasn't wired with a blue wire. The cluster was expecting the signal from the 2001 ECU. That I didn't have. So opening up the distributor, there was the empty spade terminal where the blue wire should have gone (in previous year models) I spaded it and ran it out the grommet of the dizz..y (damn that word is riduclous to spell often) and to the blue wire on my DX harness.
sorry for not giving yall full details but i have a 97 ls swap in a 95 civic with an obd1 ecu...anyways if you wanna call it ghetto rigged then thats what did cuz at the time i didnt have no help nor any info but yeah i just tapped into the blue/grey tach signal wire on the harness plug that runs to the distributor...and just so yall know i was installing a autometer shiftlight and not a 5" moster tach...haha....well everything is working fine so i appreciate the info...thanks, Sal
