Default 1....2.....50 Questions!! =)

Hi Everyone!

Obviously, I'm a new user, so my questions might sound "amateur", but I have been reading posts for a while. I just bought a 1998 GS-R a month ago and I just have general questions. I was wondering, I have the white GS-R, but I was wondering if 1998's are either Tafetta White or Frost White? Secondly, will a Greddy exhaust from a 95 Civic fit on my car? There is a good deal for one. (I'm cheap) Also, I just barely installed a AEM CAI on my car, which was used, and I should be getting my bypass valve and I was wondering where I should install it? My intake is the older 2 piece version and it disconnects about 8 inches away from the throttle body. Should I place the bypass valve there or a different location. Also, if you were me, what would your next modification be? I was thinking of purchasing a Type-R swaybar, but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk of tearing the subframe or the installation of the BSQ/Beaks kit, since I'm a poor guy. I know exhausts look and obviously give a nice tune to the car, but would a Skunk2 intake manifold, or Cams, or etc,etc be a better bang for the buck? What do you recommend? Ok, thanks for listening to this big thing, any recommendations are glady appreciated! Also, I know this is the wrong forum, but if you are selling any parts I am very willing to purchase! Oh wait, new question just came up! Haha, I just put on 712 Kuhmo Supra's and I was wondering what the proper tire pressure ratings should be. Thanks! By the way, I've seen Fast and the Furious twice! Haha, call me a ricer, but I love it!

Let me welcome you to Honda-Tech. I'm not the most tech person here, but I think I can help you on a couple of questions. As far as mods go, are you going for appearance or speed??

If you want to go faster, I would get an exhaust to go along with the intake, a set of headers might be in order too. These are just the first basic mods to get. Cams are definitely a good way to get some nice HP numbers, but you have to ask yourself, are you going for all-motor or going to turbo it or anything. If you want cams and want to be all motor, get the JUN cams. They are a very wild cam and are great for all motor. If going for a turbo application, go with Type-R cams.

As far as the tire pressure, I actually have the same tires and filled mine up today. I set them all at about 34-35 psi.

I hope my information helps, if I am wrong in any area, please correct me so that I know in the future and so 98-GSR knows the right things.

BTW, I don't know how you're so poor, a 98 GSR isn't too cheap. hehe, peace!

-Matt

I have been checking into the sway bars, and I heard the comptechs rip the subframe a lot. But from what I read, it had to do with how they mounted to the subframe. They put them on the type r, and they told me at the dealer ship I didn't have to worry about the subframe tearing. I also checked into progress, they are supposed to be pretty good to, heard there aren't to many problems with those. I to am guilty of enjoying the fast and the furious. I was just stoked to see some fast imports in the movies. I watched gone in sixty seconds a million times, and I think one of my favortie parts was watching the hot girl, and the civic race the 911. "Oh honey you're so talented"(?)

Wow, those posts were quick, considering it's 2:17 MST! I defintely going for speed "GO" than show! I would like my car to look nice of course, but I don't want some showy (is that a word) car that is slow as ever . I actually got the car relatively cheap in California, I flew there from Utah and drove it back. Big risk, but it was worth it. Excellent condition, etc, etc, 43,000 miles on the odometer at I got it for a little under $15,000. Well, at least compared to the prices around Utah it was a good deal. Oops, got a little side-tracked. Well, the car is intended to be a reliable car to get me from work/school and home, so as of now and due to lack of money I doubt I will go Forced Induction, unfortunately, so Cams? I have no clue what Cams do, as I am not to knowledgable (is there an "e") about cars. How much are different cams approximately and how much would an install be? What type of gains are to be had and any negatives? Also, what does JDM stand for? (Japanese Domestic Market?? Wow, I'm a car dork! Thanks Again!

We'll from what i've learned reading message boards 24/7 for a month since I currently lack funds to add more parts is that if you want some more unf with less room for error Type-R cams would be nice, i think $450-550 for the pair. For more agressive power people like Toda B's , Jun 2's , i think those run like a grand for the pair (intake/exhaust) and you really need to to upgrade your valvetrain (springs/ti retainers), get a V-tec contoller, cam gears and then tune on the dyno to get the power out of them, then you need a free flowing header, upgraded fuel system, skunk2 intake manifold, bored td, possibly better ignition... i just give myself a headache when I add it all up and it ain't gonna be cheap. It just depends on your goals? Can you afford the car to sit in the shop some, do you have a dependable mechanic who can work on it? I'm asking myself the same questions. I need to decide how much I want to spend as do you. I think if I decide to get a little more unf I would get myself Type - r cams, some cam gears, a Vtec/fuel controller (v-afc), jdm 4-1 header, upgraded springs/retainers and then tune it w/ higher redline and you should be in mid/high 14 range. Anyways it's late and i'm rambling, i'm getting such a headache from this all-motor mess that i'm thinking of saving up for a JRSC , run it at stock 6psi, get the necessary safety measures and call it done because my goal is to be able to hang w/ stock Z28s and Mustang GTs if not beat them by a little.

If you want to build the driver for "go" and not just the car, see if there are some autocross (SoloII) events near you! You said Utah, so check here..
http://www.utahscca.com/

Autocross is easy to get started in, quite safe (although not _totally_ safe, of course), legal, and rather economical.. and you'll learn a _whole_ lot about car control. One warning, though.. it can be incredibly addictive.

Spend money on the driver before spending money on the car.
