Range of most paging alarm systems? *including Compustar 2wss*
I'll be going back to school in a few months, and I know that I'll be parking on campus at school and probably not more than a few blocks away in class at the most. Will the range of the compustar, for example, make it to me in the event that my alarm goes off?
Anyone in a similar situation as me? Any experiences? TIA!
*BTW, this school has many incidents of stolen cars...esp modified Imports*

An alarm is only as good as the install.
GO with a compustar. and make sure someone takes great care and placement of the key sensors brain wires ect....
Range depends on a lot of things, I live in a solid brick buliding about 2 football fields away from my car, and if anything triggers the alarm i get paged. So i am sure that it is good up to around a mile...

Damn! That's some good range! And I'm assuming you have the Compustar 2WSS? I guess that settles my decisions...now to find an authorized dealer.

Question....you say you get paged....BUT... can you disarm/arm the car from there?
I've been trying to find out if the pager will still beep if the alarm goes off...even though it can't transmit to the car.... The transmitter in the car has to be beefier than the little remote.
Noone seems to have an exact answer...good to find someone with the same sort of system.

I can remote start my car from my work and my car is still parked at my apartment......2 and a half blocks away...i got tvs and **** loads of electronics in the building to cause inteference....I am using the 2wfm-as....works beautifully....i love it....
The new model compustar 2wss is a pretty good unit, as long as you bring it to someone that installs it well. I have been installing for 6 years now, and its the shitty installed compustar's that i have had problems with.
If you can one the old compustars are actually the best. These were produced before the FCC caught on about how powerful the transmitters actually were. The old units could get almost a mile and a half range. pretty sweet...
One word of caution with the new compustars: Be SURE to keep a fresh battery in the remote. Once the battery gauge gets down to half you will start to have all sorts of wierd things happen.

Talk about back from the dead!
I started this thread back in April, 03! And have since had my Compustar alarm since May of 03.
If the remote can get paged from that distance, then yes: It can arm/disarm from that distance as well. I was in the shopping mall once and my brother calls me up on my cell looking for his wallet. He thought he left it in my car. So I told him to meet me at the mall. About 30 mins later my wife and I grab a bite to eat at the food court, then I get a page on my remote. I forgot all about my brother coming by, so he calls me up saying that he saw my car in the parking lot and decided to test my alarm's distance. So I just disarmed the alarm for him, he looked through my car and found his wallet. Then I armed it again. He confirmed that it was armed by the LED. So that's my little story on the Compustar's range. The food court was probably about a football field away from where I parked. And this is through all the walls and whatnot. Pretty good system, I must say.

considering that's only 840 feet, and a mile is 5280... anyhow. Most alarms will get maybe 1000 feet in good conditions. Alot of people who say "my alarm reachs 1/2 mile" or "a mile!" or whatever have no real judgement of distance.
You may get 1/4 mile to 1/2 ( 1/2 is extremely pushing it and I doubt that *VERY* much) *in* perfect or near perfect conditions.

is the pager still good if you park your car in the apartment underground parking? do you get from the basement if you live on the 20th floor?

Good luck with that one. Solid buildings like that suck for the 434 MHz signal, not to mention the signal really doesn't carry much power. The range for most systems I see tend to be about equal to what you could do with the .1 watt signal off of a 802.11B WAP (2.4 GHz) or slightly better.

lol yeap, and it does work too! My friend's VW keyless sucks... it works to about 15~25 feet away from the car if that. If he puts the fob under his chin he can make it reach out about two times as far
