Anybody wants to give some step-by-step instruction with picturesz on changing a headgasket ?? on a Sohc??

or changing timing belt??

doing both at the same time is a good idea!

changing the head gasket is very strait forward. take off head, remove old gasket, put on new gasket, put head back on.

find somebody to hook you up with the torque specs

 

i wont help with timing belts thats too touchy. but the head gasket isnt too hard. Remove the head. there are I think 8 head studs and several bolts. you need to remove them gently and in a specific pattern, i think its crossovers but Im not positive! You can raise comp. through your head gasket too!

 

don`t forget to drain the coolant.

i have the helm's with me.. so i know the specs...

and i think they have the instructions too.. but i am just not too confident !!

is there anything else I need to be cautious??

also when taking off the head, i will need to take out my timing belt, right??


Now people say it's good to changemy timing belt when i change my HG
my car is at around 170,000 KM which is around 30,000 KM short to a timing belt change.. should i change it now?? or wait??

Here is a quote from a previous post in the Tech section. I wish I could remember who originally wrote it (pulled from my notepad).

Here's how I change head gaskets:

1. Remove everything that would keep the head from leaving your engine bay (Plug wires, injector plugs, vaccuum hoses, etc.). There is a bracket on the bottom of your intake manifold that is connected to the block, if not using a hoist, this can be a bitch to remove. Drain coolant
2. Remove valve cover, timing cover, cam caps (DOHC), cams (DOHC).
3. Mark your timing belt position.
4. Relieve tension on timing belt and move belt away from cam gear(s).
5. Remove exhaust manifold, this can be hard if it's never been removed.
6. Lift head off slowly, making sure everything is out of the way.
7. Send head to machine shop for 3-angle valve job, resurfacing, new seals, and cleaning. (Not necessary, but nice to do)
8. Thouroughly clean the surface of your block, I use an air sander to clean it.
9. Install new gasket, bolt head on in criss-cross pattern, put timing belt back on, replace exhaust manifold/valve cover gasket if necessary. Put everything else back on.
10. Change oil, add coolant, change thermostat, change plugs if you feel necessary, start your car, and congratulate yourself. </TD></TR></TABLE>

1. when it says mark the timing belt position, what does that mean?
2. So the timing belt doesn't need to be totally removed, right? just away from the gam gear is enough?
3. WHAT should I use to clean the block??? can i just use some cloth to clean it?
4. WHY WHY WHY do i need to change my thermostate??

marking the timing belt position is when you just mark a line across the timing belt and the cam gear so when you go to put it back on you can line up the marks so you don't **** up your timing.

 

I don't think the thermostat thing is a must, probably just a "while your there" job. I wish I could help more, but there is a reason I was looking up this info, I haven't done this yet either!
