I want to turn my white wheels into gun metal. I have called a few places and it seems that painting them or powdercoating them will be the same price. Which process will be better?
i had mine painted for a while, then it chipped quite abit with all the gravel and **** on the road. so i took mine in to get powder coated. i like the powder coating better because the color actually bonds to the metal, so even if it does chip, it is still the same color uder the chip!
If you are going to get the job done at a shop, I would go with powdercoating. One of the benefits of a DIY paintjob is that you can just leave the tires on there. You cannot do this with powdercoating, its a powder that is then heat treated to the metal.

Are those notecards stuck in between the rim and tire?

Sparyed em my self and cleared them about 4 times. At one point of the clear process I had about .2mm of clear sitting in the center of the rim lol . Looked milky white
Paint...

Powdercoat...
I've had both done. If you do the paint well, I think it can be just as durable as a powdercoat. If you have the extra money and are looking for a wide variety of colors, then go for the powdercoat.
There is quite a large price difference, with the paint costing around $20 bucks total...And the powdercoat running anywhere from $200-$400 for the set.

i had my wheels powdercoated, and i wish i had just rattle canned them. the powdercoat is chipping like a motherf*cker and it can't just be feathered out with sand paper or stripped off with paint thinner and repainted. you can paint in your backyard in a few hours versus a week or so to powdercoat. and THEN you gotta get your tires REMOUNTED. powdercoating is a real PITA and not worth the hassle for the results.
Just paint them yourself.

and by the way.. the buddyclub wheels.. painted.. they are not powder coated.. they would be heavier than they are if they were powdercoated.. plus i have them and now have rock chips in them... but at least i can just take them to a shop and have them redone.. unlike powdercoated wheels..

Actually skip I had mine re-done. So they are powderocated.
And about the wheels being heavier from powdercoating...I don't think so. Paint is just cheaper...Bottom line.

I also painted mine, it's not hard at all. If you do it yourself then you'll be saving TONS of money.

didnt even read the post.....if it's the same price then take this into account:
it takes a chizel to take off a powder coat, and it takes more like sandpaper to take off paint
your choice

Me vote would be to powdercoat! For long lasting results, they can put a cleat powerdercoat ontop of the color one....to give chip and scratch resistance. Thats what a lot of mountain bikes are done to prevent they from being chipped with rocks.
I repainted my HXs twice. First time they were flat black (no clear...mistake) and now theyre Gunmetal with a polished rim (clear coated) and I like both of my jobs!! Cheap, easy and you can change them as much as you want..paint for my latest job was like 8 bucks!
