KYB AGX compared to Koni Yellow
i have heard that the yellows are like the mecedes of shocks very nice but expensive. they are nice if you have the cash.
my friend has some kyb's they are nice. he likes them, especially the price

well im sure even stock replacement would be a lot better than stocks with 230K on them
but i mean hell if im gonna spend $300 on a set of shocks why not spend $500 i just dont wanna spend extra money on something that isnt noticably all that much better

if you plan on running stock springs, the agx is a good choice. if you plan on running street lowering springs with a mild rate (like eibach prokit) then the agx is also fine. if you run the more aggressive street springs like sportlines, then the agx is still probably ok. but as soon as you run heavy springs like race springs then the agx's will run out of capability and the Koni's will kick their butts.
in all seriousness though, the shocks are more important than the springs (as long as your springs are not totally wacky wrong); so the Koni's will be better than AGX's always for everything in my opinion. But the AGX's will do ok for most people's purposes. For that matter, the Tokico blue will do as well too. I'd do either a Tokico blue or a Koni.... i wouldn't buy anything in between really.

Tokicos are good but i went with Koni's for their reputation as well as i have the option later to have them revalved for higher spring rates. I will probably end up running higher rates than 450/600# next year.
Wanted to add a note about Tokico blues. Less than 2 years + too low + too high of springrates= 3 out of 4 shocks wasted. I wouldn't run coilovers with them like I did.
(I actually didn't order Tokicos, but that's another story) I have Koni's now and the difference is night and day. Definitely more capable of handling my somewhat mild rates (300/350), more control through adjustability, plus the rebuildability that RJ mentioned.
I have a friend with both Koni's and KYB's on separate 90-91 cars, and he says the AGX are pretty good but the Koni's are better. He has autocrossed both cars. On the KYB's he has Eibach Sportlines and on the Koni's he has custom rate GC's.
Search the archives for this forum, CRXLee posted some shock dyno curves for the popular OTS shocks, might help your decision. Big differences visable there.

I have kyb agx on my car. I've put them thru a lot of abuse. 2 full years of auto-x on them. 1 year on 2+" drop eibach sportlines, now on about 1.5-2.0" drop on 350/400 rates. They probably aren't optimal but they have been able to handle it though. I'm just hoping they'll hold on for another season so I don't haev to pay $500 for the konis just yet.

My 450 pounders blew them to pieces in the rear. It was not "slammed" by any means.

mine are handling 350/400 fine for now. I have about 9 events on these rates i think, and i'm even pretty low.
I've heard mixed things about the rates they can handle though so maybe I just got lucky.

i have heard that the AGX warranty is voided with drops lower than 1.5". im not going to side with either on this debate, because i also remember that Corey was using AGX's for a while without problems.

I have the tokicos, but i'm running the springs that came with them which are softish. I have toyed with the idea of switching to the Pro-Kit, but i already have the koni's and coil-overs....as soon as a stop getting faster in my car then the new suspension will go on.
BTW I called Tokico direct and asked what spring rates the Blues and Illumina's could handle. Blues max out around 300 (the rep was very shakey when he said this) and the illuminas around 350. again, he definetly didn't recomend running those rates if you want the shocks to last long.

The KYBs are a good alternative to no shocks at all.
Tokicos are superior to KYBs and inferior to Konis.
The Konis are a good, entry-level competition shock for street cars.
All told you get what you pay for.
If I only had money for KYBs I would not bother buying them unless my current shocks were actually leaking fluid. Instead I would spend my money on seat time and instruction.

Then Koni's. It's like a burger. You can make them any way you want.

Here is a question for those using the neuspeed SP3 (for a DC2/4). What perch setting is the stock (oem shock) setting? Thanks!

The middle position of the five on the Neuspeed KONI SP3s is the stock location. That gives you two positions up and two positions down from stock to adjust your ride height with the circlips.

I ran a set of KYB AGX shocks for 3 years, w/ absolutly no problem with the dampning at all, even raced most of the ECHC last year w/ them.. Still never blown, but never had the car slammed, I was running 400FR and 500R rates..
KYB, great shock for autox, weekend track driver..

I like the agx's cuase (get this) they only have 4 positions to mess with and I haven't been in the game long enough to know what to set the konis at.
I will eventually upgrade to konis I believe and when I do I will just sell the agx's and swap em out. I havent had problem one with the agx's and actually just purchased a second pair for my eg project.

I recently bought a set of koni's and mine have the 5 settings front and rear. Does this mean I have the neuspeed edition or is that normal for an eg civic?

Those are to put the clip for the spring perch (ride height)
The adjustment we usually refer to is the **** at the top of the shock shaft to adjust damping.
