Default fiberglass enclosure in tire well.

I just made my first spare tire well enclosure. I love it. I will never build a box again. The install is really clean and it hits pretty nice. I am going to try to post some pics later. The only downside is that it took me 2 days, ~$100, and a few hundred thousand brain cells from the fumes of the resin, spray glue, and contact cement. Just thought I'd let you all know.

It is for one 12. It is a little over 1ft^3. I took pics and will be able to post them tonight.

The true test was the ride to work this morning. Aside from having to open the window because of the fumes (I barely have enough brain cells left to type), the enclosure was great. I put carpet padding on the bottom of it which lowered the road noise a bit and got rid of some squeeks in the rear of the car. It didn't move around or anything. I am very pleased.

I'm confused on why your car still stinks? Didn't you pull the mold out of the car? you only need to lay up the first two layers in the car, let it cure (fully) then pull it out.

Regardless....you need replacatone to clean your arms. Simialr to acetone, made to clean your skin.

go to http://www.tapplastics.com to see what I'm talking about, any 'glass store will have some for you.

And yes, when it comes time to build, your arm hair count goes down....just make sure to wear shoes....fiberglass + reefs = ouch

I've worked with epoxy fiberglass in the past. It's much nicer to work with than polyester. It's a 2 part formula but it's mixed 2:1. It's alot harder when finished and gives a much longer working time. It does take longer to dry though. It costs a bit more too. It's great for body repair because of it's toughness.

Yeah I noticed that the resin I was using dried too much within minutes. It was getting to clumpy to work with. I felt rushed the whole time I was using it. Also, is there a good way to clean brushes used in this process or do you just go to the dollar store and stock up?

Epoxy is also a bit more brittle, making it less impact resistant.

If your resin is setting up too quickly, then you are probably mixing either too much, or you are mixing it too hot...dial back the amount of MEKP that you are adding.

You can use acetone to clean brushes, I but I have found that it's far easier to just throw them away. You may want to think about trimming your brushes to 1" long so that the bristles are more firm...should help in getting out the bubbles (espeically if you are not using a roller).
