THSCC at VIR-South
Well, if you wern't there, you definitely missed out. The weather was perfect, the event ran like clockwork, the students kept it on track, the instructors DIDN'T screw up the red flag situation (they thought a car was on fire), and a few of us gained time over last year during the TT.
Personally, I'm thrilled with my Sunday time of 1:26.4something. This was a 2+ second improvement over Saturday.
Also at least a 5 second improvement over the Black Miata as I don't think I even broke 1:32s in that car, though I don't have a clear memory of my times last year. I could go check, but it's upstairs, and I'm downstairs and lazy.
TheCaptian was smokin' in his Civic... Pulled 3rd FTD today. OMFG! Karl, Matt, Shawn, Mike, and Kendra were also in attendance (we had all of No Gum together for a change). I'll let the others tell their stories...
Diane ~ who feels fast today... don't anyone set me straight, OK?

What a blast!
The highlight of my weekend was absolutely, without a doubt, getting to drive Ron (thecaptain)'s H4 Civic and Karl's H3 Integra in the school groups. Thanks a lot guys for letting me take your cars out! Karl drove my BMW for a session and Ron has a raincheck for next time
Driving the Civic was without a doubt the most fun I have ever had on 4 wheels. Oh my god, what have I been doing wasting my time in my POS BMW? Ron's car is super twitchy (read: good) and can be made to corner by merely thinking about turning the wheel. My compliments to the car builder! To Ron's chagrin, I wasn't taking it _too_ easy, either, running conservative 1:28s in traffic. Ron DID bang off a 1:24 in the Time Trial for 3rd overall! Way to go!
Karl's Integra ... again, OMG! It pulls and pulls and pulls. Superb in the corners and super stable but not nearly as "entertaining" as the Civic. That is one fast *** solid well built car. Timed a 1:25 in it on my 2nd lap.
I was happy with a 1:25.0 in the TT today for first of 6 in DSP. That's it, that's all I can get out of the jalopy as is. Maybe Hans Stuck or Boris Said could do better, but I'm done! Actually, I would hand the keys to those guys in an instant to see how much I could really improve
Karl's comment after getting out of my car -- "This is one Understeering Bastard!". Well, maybe compared to your car
Mike -- who made his mind up to get an H4 car in turn 1, lap 1 while driving the Civic.

I had a great deal of fun this weekend, the weather was superb, and the car ran great. Didn't appear to burn any oil at all, although measuring with the oil cooler has become a bit of a dodgy affair.
I am less and less impressed with the Kumho Ecsta V700s. They just don't feel confidence-inspiring, and they are SLOW when driven with the amount of slip Hoosiers allow. The driving style I've developed over the last couple years (which basically involves a whole pile of trailbraking and "tossing it into corners") is not rewarded by these tires. I slowed down year versus year. Seems the LSD and cage are being offset by the significant additional weight and "Not Hoosiers."
In other news, I tested a new Carbotech brake compound this weekend, and allow me to say, HOLY %$*&ING CH!T. Repeated, 120mph stops while facing at a way-too-late brake marker? No problem. Severe trailbraking trying to find SOME speed out there? Go for it. Severe wear? Not on your life. More on these pads as I find out more information.
Whitney's car surprised the heck out of me - punching it mid-corner just made it push more, and that short shift kit is WAY too short...I couldn't find second gear. That said, it's impressive that he drives it as fast as he does.
--Rice, who will buy R3S04s as soon as they come out, wallet be damned...

That beer you're bringing me... I'm liking Hooegarten these days. Great in hot weather. Yummy.

Panther XP 1109. A.K.A. Panther HFS (holy f@#king $hit!!), Panther "Oh My God!", Panther Parachute, Panther Brick Wall...
At 117mph, I didn't hit the brakes until marker 3. At least 50-75 feet later than '08s. I scared the crap out of Scott (Celica73), and myself.
Quote: "Holy chit do you brake late!!" - Whitney. We're painting them brown, too. What's not to like?
On the event: possibly the finest event I've ever attended.

Had an absolute blast, and didn't send my car careening wildly down the hill at South Bend this year. The Focus is much easier to drive (and substantially slower) than the Eclipse.
This track noob did manage to add a bit of left foot braking to his repertoire.
Hmmm...Two staight years at the April VIR school - missed the 3rd session on Sunday due to a busted car.

I had one hell of a weekend, and in all, I don't think it could have gone better.
"Shut up and Drive!"
That's how I would title the weekend. I've spent the past two years pouring blood sweat, tears and a lot of money into my Street Mod '73 Celica.
Anyhow, I finally quit my bitching and took it for a drive. So, this was the big test for the car, here's the list of the "new" parts that were being tested at this event:
Engine (started the event with about 600 miles on it - I rebuilt the engine, so any failures are my fault).
Suspension: New front suspension (GC parts) and new rear springs, all set up by me (new spring rates, vs the old cut stock springs).
Oil system: I added an oil cooler and accusump.
In addition to all of that, I just bought a trailer and it was my first weekend towing. Not to mention, my 2nd real track event (I'm not counting an Alfa Club event where there was a pace car all weekend).
So, how does a 30 year old car, built by an amature, handle a weekend at VIR south? Pretty darn well, that's how.
On Saturday the car was strong, but had some fuel delivery issues, I couldn't get past 5000 rpm in 4th gear on the front straight (it would start to sputter at about pit-out). In the first session the brakes had a bit of green fade, but that wasn't major.
So, I ran the day, and did my first time trial Saturday afternoon. With the car sputtering up the straight and in south bend, I managed a 1:34.7 for my best time. Not bad for a 30 year old car on street tires (3 year old BFG R1's).
Saturday evening was spent towing home, then swapping out the fuel filter and a slightly pinched fuel hose. Sunday morning I adjusted one of the carb floats (dual side drafts). I also discovered that one of the rear axle seals was leaking, so I had to clean up that mess.
Anyhow, the car ran even better on Sunday, I fixed the fuel delivery problems and suddenly had about 1300 more RPM in 4th gear to play with, needless to say, I had to adjust my braking points for turn 1!!
The axle seal was concerning me (it was leaking onto the drivers side rear brakes), but it wasn't oiling the track so I just monitored it and cleaned up between sessions. I skipped the 3rd session (difficult choice) in order to save the car for the time trial.
Anyhow, I ran a 1:32.4 on Sunday, a 2.3 second improvement (I drove poorly though, sliding the car way too much in about every turn).
The Carbotech brakes worked all weekend without any problems at all, hardly any front pad wear, and very good balance (when there was gas in the tank, it got a bit squirrly with a light fuel load).
Thanks to everyone (pretty much the entire NoGum crew) who fielded all my questions and gave good advice troughout the weekend (MadMatt in particular), also a big thanks to Ron Spencer for his rolling parts store. He had a cotter pin that saved the day for me.
The accusump worked beautifully, I always had adequate pressure, and the engine builder must have done a fair job, temps never went over 185, even at the end of the front straight (yes, Matt, I saw and felt it when you had to turn the heat on). I did appear to burn about 1 quart of oil over the entire weekend (hey, the engine only has 600 miles on it). Good to know repeated runs up-hill in 4th gear at over 6000 rpm don't bother this thing. The new suspension bits were wonderful as well. The car was quite balanced, rotating easily when needed, but by no means unpredictable. Even in turn 1-2 I didn't have a bad push unless I really overcooked it. It was nice to run an event without using the bumpstops.
For what it's worth, after all that, the '73 Celica didn't even get to rest on the way home. I hauled the busted Focus (see above) home, while Tom (tomfree) drove the Celica. He agreed, the car sounds like a busted piece of junk, but as soon as you get on it and the dual side drafts open up, you seem to forget all the nasty things you were just thinking, and grin, a big grin...
Maybe I will keep this car, well it's time to go fix a leaky axle seal so I can take another hit on the crack pipe.

What board did you find that discussion on? Thanks.
Another highlight of the weekend -- about 30 minutes before the Sunday TT, my wife decides she has been talked into running the TT (her first!) in my car. It took a few weeks to convince her
She has no seat time in my car on track (just in her non-TT legal daily driver), so she went out for 1/2 session in mine to get a feel for it, and ran a solid mid-pack overall time in the TT. Her hands were shaking after her runs!
Nice. Kendra tries yet another stronger drug
And she didn't even hit a tree this time! I'm so proud of her!
