Default Cleaning a Mugen exhaust manifold?

My Mugen header seems to have scurvy or something. It has this thick brown filth all over it, which I presume is somewhat normal from heating, cooling, and getting dirt and road grime deposits on it. I would rather not remove it and repolish it by hand, but I imagine that's my only option.

Does anyone have any tried and true methods or chemicals that will assist in bringing it back to a nice shine? A friend of mine used some crazy German potato salad or something, it was like goopy white stuff, and it wasn't jizz because the Mugen header isn't THAT cool.. Anyway his turned out acceptable, but not like I expected considering the consistancy of the crud and the work required.

if you take it off you have to get a new exhaust gasket.

I didn't have to replace the exhaust gasket when I installed my A'PEXi header....

Somehow I doubt a non-leaky header gasket has anything to do with corrosion all over the header.

My 3-year-old GReddy 4-2-1 stainless is a mess after it went through one New England winter (my Civic is no longer a daily driver). It's all pitted an dark and nasty. I doubt there's much that I can do to revive it. Maybe go at it with a Dremel, some polish and a polishing attachment. I doubt I'll have the initiative to do that anytime soon though!
