Default Car purchase opinions needed. 85 civic.

Hi, I'm normally in the EK forums but my g/f recently mentioned that she would like to purchase a beater. We found an 85 civic for really cheap and would like to know if it is worth the hassle. We are hoping to get it and swap in a b16a or a ZC. The problem is, i see that most people run 88-91 crx's or civics. What is the major difference here and should we just look for an 88-91. thanks.

Most 84-7 Civics are carbureted, which makes ZC and B16 swaps a little tricky. Hasport has everything you need for a B-series swap into these cars, but even starting with a fuel injected model, you're looking at close to $2k plus the cost of the drivetrain. For carb'd cars, an Si head swap is supposed to yield good power gains, and can be found easily in most junkyards.

Parts availability isn't as good as 88+ models, but they're cheaper and lighter. The suspension isn't as sophisticated- struts up front, and a solid rear axle, but they're light enough that they'll still handle well.
