Default My '99 Accord's side mirror is "floppy"

Just this morning my wife noticed that the driver's side mirror is loose.

The '99 has bendable mirrors, just imagine if the mirror doesn't "snap" into place, it just sort of moves in and out at will. By "mirror", I mean the actual mirror plus the housing it is in, but not the base which is attached to the car.

It doesn't look like anybody hit it or anything, and the electric adjustment still works (for the mirror itself). A couple of years ago I had to replace my passenger side mirror (the one in my avatar), at that time it cost $150 for the part (dealer MSRP = $200), but the place I bought the mirror from doesn't sell parts like that anymore.

This weekend I will take a closer look at it, take it apart, and see if I can fix it. If not, I will probably just superglue it in place. It won't be bendable anymore, but it's not worth $150 or $200 to me at this time to have a bendable mirror.

Has this happened to anybody? What did you do?

skip the superglue and use JB Weld instead

never had this happen or even heard of it before. I'd guess there is some sort of spring in there that keeps some tension on it. It probably broke

I believe he was referring to it being "limp wristed". Of course, since cars are referred to as female, it would be lesbian.

My car, the lesbian lover...

Anyway, I just took it apart. For whatever reason, the screws just don't hold the mirror to the base tight enough for it to "snap" into place. It is still very loose, jsut driving at 25 mph down my street the wind had enough pressure to fold my mirror back to the car.

Either somebody walked up and smaked it, or a car door hit it pretty hard (though there are no new scuff marks). Or it just broke on it's own.

Who knows.

I'll take a look for the JB Weld stuff. Pretty much anything between the base and the mirror would keep it in position. I wouldn't be able to bend it anymore, but I'll live without a bending mirror. The electric power adjustment still works.
