Default Head swap questions.

I have a 99 GS w/AT. I heard that a head swap is one of the best ways to modify your engine if you would like to stay NA. What is the best head for this, and don't say LS VTECH, be specific, B18c? B16a? what is the best all around and what will I need to make it work?

if you're asking those questions you need to read up more.

personally, I find LS-Vtec setups to be rather heavy on maint. unless they are done to right (most of them aren't).

There are plenty of people who have them, but they also work on their cars on a weekly basis (atleast if they want the setup to last).

support your theory of
ls/vtec becoming more high
maintanance than regular engine
thanks

i bought a 94 gsr (b18c1) head from a friend of mine. assuming that your engine is done well, it shouldnt be unreliable. the b18c1 will have more power and torque than the b16, but the best all around i would think is the type r b18c5

well i am making 205 horse on my 1998 ls. i sent the head to bill gude and he did a race package on it shaved the head port polish valves springs cams. i ideals at stock and is a dead sleeper. if you have a good head with some nice cams there is no need for vtec.

How much did that cost you? What other mods do you have on your car?

Its not Vtech. The B16 is the same head as the B18C5.

One more thing...I would say the B16 would be the head to go for due to the short runners...or a P&P LS head...much like the one in my sig

The B18B block doesn't have the oil jets like the B18C1/5 does, which could become a reliability issue if you're not careful.

switch from automatic to a manual Si or Type R tranny.
just my opinion.

That's just not true.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">. the b18c1 will have more power and torque than the b16 </TD></TR></TABLE>

That's only cuz the C1 compression will be a little higher than the b16, statement was kinda misleading... the power diff won't be large between heads. BUT, the B18c1 will require you to use the gsr I/M and buy a couple extra parts... and also will need a gsr ecu in particular to control the manifold properly. (dual runners)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i sent the head to bill gude and he did a race package on it shaved the head port polish valves springs cams. i ideals at stock and is a dead sleeper. if you have a good head with some nice cams there is no need for vtec. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Good route to take over LSVT, almost same investment and you won't need to replace the pistons. BTW, still using stock pistons/timing belt on that setup ?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">The B16 is the same head as the B18C5. </TD></TR></TABLE>

The casting is the same, but the B18c5 is hand ported and polished from the factory.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">The B18B block doesn't have the oil jets like the B18C1/5 does, which could become a reliability issue if you're not careful</TD></TR></TABLE>

Not really, I mean, the jets help engine longevity on a high revving motor, but won't cause a reliability issue per se.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">if you're asking those questions you need to read up more. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Word.

BTW, the LS tranny will not go well w/ LSVT setup as the gearing is longer than other B series trannys. Basically you won't be as fast as even a GSR if you have an LSVT and LS tranny.
