Default Looking for help picking large turbo, yes its a vw but you guys know your turbos :)

Hello, my name is jay, i'm coming from the vw world and am looking for some turbo help. I've been reading your forums for a while and am very impressed with your turbo knowledge and setups. I have a 1.8t motor that i am looking to get 450-500whp on 104 octane. I am unsure of what turbo to use. THe motor will rev to about 7800-8000 rpms. bore is 81mm stroke is 86.4 i dont know if thats helpful to you guys or not. What would you recommend i should use for a turbo? I am also going to be running stand alone for my engine management. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

That's what I was going to say.

but the SC44 would be the right turbo for 450-500.

The SC44 will support 565hp at the crank (480 or so wheel) with in it's efficiency range.

You don't want to go too big when picking a turbo. Pick a turbo that will support 450-500 with it's sweet spot.

Billy Tylaska was using a 50 trim T4, with a stage 5 turbine wheel in a .48 a/r housing. made 404 whp off the bottle.

I remember billy had problems when he installed the 57 trim last year w/ surging. then he went down to a 50 trim. Havn't heard much about him lately but for ur hp goal u r gonna need at least a 60trim or a 60-1. a precision SC61 would be the step above a 60-1.

billy also was using stock managment, so this probably had an effect on the surgin, as our map sensor when it reads over 24psi throws the car into a limp mode.

you will need a new manifold to get rid of the internal wastegate dont forget. I would say a precision sc44 would be good for your hp goals. you would need it to spool quick so get a .48 or .63 rear no matter what. i just pulled my motor from my 1.8t jetta which a friend blew up. the turbo is a joke. it has a 2 inch inlet if that.

Billy is a cool local from here. His good buddy john is using a Precision SC44, which is the 60 trim T04E compressor and a T3 .63AR 76trim(stage 3 wheel) that made I think 430whp. I had posted a video of his car a while back, but I dont know what I did with it.

But like mike said, I would go with the Precision SC44 turbo.
