So I am trying to think of ways to clean and loosen the oil rings on the pistons without haveing to tear down the engine..

My engine (d16a6) smokes on shifts right now so its the valve steam seals or the oil rings..I figure..if it still smokes after I change the valve stem seals I could try this.

This one is far fetched... How about the ATF trick with Gasoline or Kerosine inplace of the ATF. Fill it up let the gas soak down the rings and let the gas do the work, Pull off oil pan after its soaked for a couple of days and pour in some fresh oil. Let it churn a bit jst like starting a newly rebuilt engine and then starting the car..

Any reasons why this would be harmful?

GM top engine cleaner will probably work better than gas or kerosine.

 

and use it along the same lines as the ATF trick?
