Default Driving School

Curious to know how many of you guys have attended driving school? I am seriously considering going to the Skip Barber driving school in Lime Rock. Only problem is that it is $1,235 for two days and an additional $875 for the third day. I am sure that it would be quite beneficial, but I have some serious bills to take care of before I shell out 2 grand for 3 days of driving school. Anybody gone through and how helpful was it? Was it worth it? My main concern is to become a better driver on the road and better learn to handle the car more safely. "Be the" car. "Be the" car. "na na na na na na." hehe

There was a discussion the other day about these... and it concluded pointing out that "profit classes" like this one are about as helpful as the "non-profit" ones that are around. I do wish I remembered the name of some of the non-profit ones, but people were mentioning that instructors were there to answering PLENTY of question, and offered tons of help. Far worth the $1500 saved... spend that on suspension and tires... then go to a non-profit (which the most I've ever seen was $200). You'll have LOTS more fun!

The "for-profit" organizations usually supply the cars/insurance though.

Skip Barber is a very well established name in the business that has a very structured program for students to go through. Some of your day will involve classroom didactic training followed by on-course instruction.

The quality of instruction is usually top notch - although there is a lot of 'tude by the instructors until you "earn your wings" so to speak.

The third day is usually worth the money as it is largely a whole day devoted to the track - where you can really race with your classmates.

I don't think you would ever feel your investment was NOT worth it. It can also accelerate your learning curve in later "non-profit" events.

If you are just going to autocross, check out the Evolution (formerly McKamey) autocross school. I just went a couple of weeks ago and it was well worth the $175 per day. You get lots of track time and one on one instruction. Check them out on autocross.com They travel all over they country so I'm not sure when they'll be in your area.

I've been to the following:

Road Atlanta 3 day Road Racing School
Mid Ohio Advanced High Performance School
Allegheny PCA Driving School at Mid Ohio (several)
Summit Point Saturday at the Track
Allegheny PCA Drivers School at Nelson Ledges (several)
Evolution Autocross Phase 1 and 2
...plus numerous track events

Road Atlanta was the most fun and informative, but it also cost the most. By far the best bang for the buck are schools put on by the Porsche Club of America (PCA) regions and some of the BMWCCA regions. With those, you can usually get two days of track time, instructors, and classroom time for about $300, sometimes less.

The Evolution autocross school was a good one as well, just at slower speeds than the others
