Ok i've spent the past hour searching for the best brake pads (daily driving), and I have come down to the AEM (nissin) pads and the Axxis Ultimate pads.

Tell me your opinion. Which would you go with?

SO far the best price i have come up with...

Axxis = 63.75
Aem = haven't really checked but should be in groupbuy.


I also will be getting some Brembo blanks later on.

 

I'm looking at getting either of these two pads... any input on which one you prefer and why?

I can give a little input on Ultimates (Axxis). I've had mine since 2-5-03 and they're still in decent shape. They're cracked, but in decent shape none-the-less. I can vouch pretty heavily for these pads. I installed them with new, stock rotors and ATE Super Blue at the same time. Huge, and I mean huge improvement over the old, stock pads. The hotter they got, the better the performance out of 'em grew. I did notice brake fade in the mountains though, but on the street, they're a terror. The thing I messed up on was the break-in. I think my method was over the top. Too much braking, not enough cool down etc. Basically, I blew it compared to what Cobalt recommends. I can't say that they would have better life, braking or less noise had I broken 'em in to Cobalt's liking though. I might buy 'em again. If I do, I'll stick to the recommendation to a "T"

Pro's:
-sticky as bloody hell on the street (compared to stock)
-good cold adhesion
-don't take much to heat 'em
-cheap

Con's:
-possible brake fade in mountainous areas
-noisy (could be related to faulty break-in)
-tendency to crack, possibly leading to failure (might be related to faulty break-in)
-will warp stock rotors if used like little ******
-lots of dust (but washes easily)

Can't tell you on the AEM's 'cause I haven't used them but I'm using the AXXIS:

1) Initial stopping is superb, fade resistant is WAY better than stock.
2) <U>Ocassionally</U> "squeal" or "screech" at very low speeds.
3) They do dust much more than stock.
4) Friendly to rotors.
5) On '99-'00 SI a little modification to the front set is necessary but is a minor job.

These are my personal opinions on pads used for daily driving only, no track use.

 

I'm running AEM pads front and rear. The rears are over a year old and the fronts are about 10months old. I had powerslots front/rear, but warped the fronts, so now I have brembo blanks up front. I'm also using ATE Type 200 brake fluid (same as superblue).

The AEM pads are a nice improvement over stock. Very little squealing. They produce a fair amount of dust, but not a big deal if you wash the car every 2wks or so and the dust comes off without much of a fight. I'm happy with the pads and they are a good choice for street.

using the ultimates as well and love them. its hard to explain but after putting them in i feel much more confident with my braking abilities over the oem pads

 

aem/nissin pads are great...ive had em for maybe 5mo

I'm not sure if the AEM pads dust more than stock. I had steelies on msot of the time. I put on my rims about the same time that the AEM pads were installed. So I can't really compare. However the AEM pads don't dust bad, but after 3-4 weeks, the wheels will start to look kinda bad/dirty. If you wash the car every 2-3 weeks, then the wheels will stay clean, you will hardly even notice the dust.

 

axxis pads are far better for performance than AEM pads (nissin OEM pads from Japan for many vehicles) So if you are looking to get a better all around street/performance pad then go for the axxis. The heat range is far better and durability is there.

 

I was just going to ask about the heat range of the ultimates.. i.e. the range of temperatures where braking is most effective. I know they are more of a "performance street/auto-x" pad, so are they not as effective in colder weather, and if so, how much less effective is it (that is to say, will it be an issue)?

 

Well to get back to this thread... i did go with the Axxis Ulimates. All I can say is DAYUM. They grip way better then OEM. I did a pretty light break-in, stopping from 20, 30, then about 50 mph. Breaking is excellent. I haven't noticed any problems in fading after abuse through some curvey roads.

Overall a great set of pads for cheap. $45 off ebay.

only complaint is the dust, but like said before it cleans off very easily.

i have aem pads on both my honda right now and used axxis metalmasters before. i like the aem as a street pad, though i would not want to use them on a track anywhere...they do dust more than stock but not as much as the metalmasters, i ahvent had a chance to try the axxis ultimates yet though.
