Honda Challenge featured at 2003 Hyperfests
Hey y'all,
Just wanted to let you know that registration is now open for the first hyperfest at Beaverun on May 17-18. Honda Challenge will be featured and have it's own run group throughout the weekend.
www.nasaproracing.com
www.hyper-fest.com
Over $1000 in prizes and cash will be awarded to Honda challenge drivers. Results will count toward NASA's east coast Honda challenge series.
This is a double. There will be 1.5 hours of track time per day and each day includes practice, qualifying and a feature race.
Drivers need to be a NASA member but may run on either a NASA, SCCA, or FIA competition license if you have never run with NASA before.
Over $40,000 has been spent marketing this event. Clearchannel has signed on as a marketing partner and will be flooding the airwaves promoting the event two weeks prior. Commercials for the event will run in 1.5 million households during the each Supertuner show two weeks prior to the event. Pep Boys, 76 Fuels are joined by other national, regional and local sponsors. The estimated crowd is 10,000 plus. There will be feature coverage of all hyperfests in Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, and Hot Compacts and Imports Magazine. Attendence figures and marketing information will be provided post event to each registered driver to use for sponsorship purposes.
See you there!!

Well Chris, if you aren't going to do anything to publicize it, why should we even bother? Geeez!
Matt (who wants to be a famous racecar driver cuz they get all the chicks!)

just out of curiousity, will security be bumped up because of the wide promotion? I know we didn't ave to many problems in the past but with an expected 10,000 participants the risk is a lot greater

Sounds great, Chris. Racing in front of a crowd like that will probably have everyone turned up a notch. Should be a good show.

Chris,
I wasn't planning to make the long tow, but will if:
**a tow fund will be provided At 10 mpg, I'll need about $225.
**at least one, preferably 2, nubile < 30yr old young females will be assigned to the "Precision Palace" for , er, active duty.
How 'bout it man? I promise to put on a good show. I won't promise to be a good boy, however...

Security will be heavier because of the size of the crowd. The concentration of forces will be heavier in some areas than in others. Access to the paddock area will be open but imited by placement. We want people to be able to talk to the drivers but at the same time we don't want the main traffic area to be through the paddock. Some guards will be in plainclothes and some in uniform. Regular event staff will also act as eyes and ears.
With all of that said this is still a public event and you need to be careful. This type of thing must be done in order to grow our sport. There will be sponsors there that have contributed to this event and many more that dig the idea but are waiting on the sidelines to see if it goes like they think it can. As a driver you will have an opportunity for REAL impressions to be made in front of potential sponsors for yourself. You also have a very real responsibility to act as an ambassador of your sport. I hate to get too serious about this but we aren't looking to be Grand Am. If this is successful we want it to benefit the enthusiast racer. Right now there is NO "middle class" in road racing like there is in Drag or Circle Track. Grand Am and ALMS are really just club racing for guys that can put the name of the companies that they own on the car...and they own big companies. We can't do it that way. We have to get the mainstream public to our EVENTS. Companies like Coke and Pepsi don't care why you have 40,000 people at an event, they just like to see 40,000 people provided that it's not a Klan rally or something terribly un-PC. Promoters and Racers alike can use this to their advantage.
It will be said (if is not already) that Cobetto is selling out to the market. Those of you that have known me for years know that I am a roadracer through and through. I got spun out on the start this weekend and came from the back of the back to win the race. I know what it is like to win and I REALLY like it. What I really don't like is spending so much money of my own to race. The only way that some of us are going to be able to continue to endulge our passions is to get sponsorship money. Right now we have a great opportunity to hook onto a "like" market and elevate ourselves and our sport. If you think I have all of the sudden developed an affinity for wings and clear tailights you do not know me. People like cars for many many reasons and spend their money accordingly. Don't let your self fall into the trap of automotive prejudice. The HFESTS are designed as a gathering of those that love cars, no matter what their particular automotive fetish.
The first HFESTS were fun and safe because we prepared for them to be that way. Don't expect anything less this year.
Peace out yO! Keep the faith.

Let me say, for one, that you don't have to do any explaining to me! I think this is a great thing, and it is doing wonders for the future of our sport! I also love the fact that I can go to a sponsor and tell them that my car will be seen by over 10,000 of their potential customers. For those who have never raced in front of large crowds, it is amazing!!!

"Concentration of Forces"? Someone's been watching too much war coverage on CNN. Glad we'll have good security. Don't want a repeat of the "Stunna near-misses Event Director" incident

Geezer ~ "Sounds great, Chris. Racing in front of a crowd like that will probably have everyone turned up a notch. Should be a good show."
Turn it up a notch, but dont over work your corner workers! I was going to let HFest be my first HPDE but i've decided to keep the CRX away from spin'n stunnas... ;-) Hopefully the Double Ms will be in force on the corners to keep you eager drivers safe. I guess i'll have to lock my car in the padock... But i'll pay that price for the growth of our sport! I just hope i dont hit another bear leaving the track on sunday.

The bottom of the B20 is almost done (back to stock b20z internals). I might just run the poor D16 till she blows on the track... if i can get a free tow home! but then i'll still need a tranny and a head for my swap... maybe i'll just keep wave'n the blue flag for a while ;-)
This event sounds awesome and I really want to bring our ITS Prelude (H2 I believe?). One question though, will I need spec tire's? What is it anyway, Toyo? I've already got fresh Hoosiers and won't be thrilled to have to buy more tires.
Note - I'm NOT starting a tire war so please don't flame. I just want to know.

if its EAST COAST HC, then you can run the hoosiers. otherwise (MIDWEST) i think you need toyos.
