Hmmm, guess who had the high bid on the CRX?

Since it's under the reserve, I will be talking to the guy tomorrow to negotiate. Let's take a poll -- how much should I pay for the car? Some more info:
Built 2 years ago
4 races at the Glen and a handful of schools
1 spare set of Borbets (no other spares)
Stock motor, trans, and final
Perfectly straight, new paint (it's purdy)
ITA legal, with logbook, never any incicents
Recent timing belt, water pump, radiator
Autopower bolt-in with door bars added
Thoughts? Keep in mind I'm looking for a fun, safe, reliable car to learn roadracing in which *could* be made into a competitive IT/HC car without a lot of labor. An ITA/H4 CRX Si has always been top of my list to meet those needs, and this is the cheapest, cleanest starter car I have seen in my 6+ months of looking. Man, what am I getting myself into!

As a recent new buyer, I know what your going through...
Some Ideas:
1) Get a copy of the log book faxed to you. I see the cage has been drilled so you can assume an annual was done. Is it current for 2003? With the new cage material requirements, I'd make sure...
2) Try and determine and verify the results of the stated history with the car. Search the results and see what kind of times he was turning...
3) Ask some other CRX or ITA guys who raced against it. See what they say about what they thought of the car... you'll be amazed at what some experienced competitors can tell you (it kept me from buying a dog!)
4) Consider upgrading costs. Ditch the bolt-in cage and go custom will cost $$. Are the shocks race spec to handle the 600-900 lb range common in the CRX? If not, add a few hundred for re-valving. What about other suspension upgrades?
It took me about 6 months to find a decent, developed ITA ride that was worth it. I spent several hours talking to experienced ITA racers before I decided on my purchase.
My guess; this may not be as developed as you might find elsewhere. If this guy came up through the ricer ranks and wants to recoup his $$, then look for a 6-7K reserve...
Good Luck!
(PS. I have a real tight 20 page legal purchase and sale agreement I put together from my car. If you get to the buying point, contact me and I'll forward a copy...)

So here is what I'll be saying in grid: "I don't mind using the chrome horn to gain some positions, I'll just have Jeeves take the CRX down to the shop and have the boys bolt on a few new fenders. Yeah! Yeah! Plow those other H4 fOkkers off the track!"
Meanwhile secretly hoping I don't have to bring a banana shaped CRX home to explain to my wife that, "Sorry, honey, roadracing _is_ going to be a little more expensive than HPDE..."

12th out of 17 and 43 out of 52 overall. That looks like a low point in this under-prepped ITA car's career. It gets better:

6th out of 19 and 14/45 overall. Better, and I'd say OK for, again, an under-prepped car.

1st of 6 and 9/30 overall. Sounds good to me! There was at least one other race he ran, but I can't find results for it.
But just a reminder -- I'm not looking for a top car (of which I have seen plenty out of my price range). I'm looking for a low barrier to entry, not having to do the prep myself, and for a car which I will not be shooting myself in the foot with in terms of future IT/EC competition possibility and/or resale value if I decide this isn't my bag of worms. I have no problems considering throwing $3-5k at this car in the future if I decide this is what I want.
So far the answer to those questions seems to be that $5000-5500 is a fair price for what I'm looking at. Thanks for the replies so far, keep 'em coming...
Mike...
Good information. Look at the top guy at the Glen in SM- He's the guy who built my car...his Dad (Mike) also runs SM but in the second WG race it looks like he's in his old ITS RX7 as well...
My records show my car (with ?/unknown driver) ran 1:23 short and 2:32's on the long course...(my guess is that Marc was the driver)
I don't know what the weather was like but you might talk to the ITA top-finishers or contact Marc...

20 page agreement for a race car? What exactly is in it other than the standard bs, especially considering the non-warrantee or guarantee nature of a racing machine? My dad is an attorney, and takes a very CYA approach to all of this, and we've never written one over one page.

For more than 5k with a bolt in cage, no diff, and stock FD this guy better gift wrap it and toss in a hand job.
Pretty car. Count on half again your initial investment with just those three things.
Would still probably be looking for spare change in my couch to come up with the dough.
-Chris, who is now putting in a weld-in, and is agog at what a diff/FD install is going to run him.
