Default Tire Sizes....

if you say a tire is 205/40. Does the 205 tell you how big the profile is? And the 40 tells you how wide the tire is?

205 is the width in mm. The 40 is the % of the aforementioned width. So the 40 is 40% of 205, which is a pretty low profile.

205 is the width of the contact patch
40 is the height of the sidewall
