Default Decision time...dark cloud looming (engine related)

well, after 135,xxx miles (the last 40,xxx being very very harsh) my integra has started to burn oil. despite the fact that my dad was an avid club racer and built all his own engines in his day whenever my cars tend to have mechanical problems he gets rid of them. i like my integra too much, and am just starting to get comfortable with it and would like to see it through to it's fully-developed state of STS tune.

since this is a Honda board and alot of you are very familiar with B-series engines, what are the problem areas? what usually goes first? I'm willing to spend the time to tear into the motor (plus it gives me an opportunity to do a stock class legal rebuild) but I shudder at setting out on this daunting task alone having never ever done any serious work on a 4 stroke motor (did build a 701cc yamaha jet-ski motor, but that was simple stuff)

should i work at convincing my father that tearing down my motor would be a fun, worth it project for the two of us, or just let him kill it if that's what he decides to do? (since he does technically own the car)

it's so young! what did you do to it to get it to burn oil?

nate-190k on the clock, doesn't burn a drop :knock-on-wood:

how you know it is BURNING oil?

you think it is the rings?

it could be other parts on your engine that is causing it to loose oil

accusump and 2 quarts of extra oil in your car for top offs at fill ups is cheaper than an engine rebuild

with that type of mileage it could be something as simple as the valve stem seal gaskets in the head.

that's the thing...I DON"T know what the problem is...hence why i was asking for a 'pre-diagnosis' from some more knowledgable than me.

for now my pops response was 'change the filter, put new oil in...see if it loses anymore, then we'll figure something out.' fair enough :shurgs:

edit.. reread your post and saw that i misunderstood it..

so is it blowing smoke or are you measuring the oil as you drain it? basically, what makes you think it's burning oil?

With that low of milage it may very well just be a seal or gasket... to little information to really tell. Man Ill tell you this though...if you are going to tear it down and rebuild, I know I would be tempted to save up and do it once I could afford a turbo buildup and turbo system and a nice EMS. Youd be SM but with the right tires/wheels and maybe eventually tranny work (lighter FW and LSD) you could do fine with practice depending on the competition in your region.

not interested in doing SM...not yet. I like the premise behind STS, and the class is full of incredible competition both in my region and on the national level. hence, it'd only be a stock legal rebuild. still....NEW engine parts would make a difference in comparison to old ones.....

if the car is smoking...i've never seen it do it. who knows where the oil went? :shrugs again:

Just check with a compression and leakdown test. If they are good, it's the oil rings. Just keep feeding it oil.
