Default How do I get VTEC to work? 89 Civic, D15 vtec, obd0....

Ok a friend and I just put a JDM SOHC Vtec motor in a buys 89 Civic hf (or whatever the lowest model made was that year)

Everything is running fine, the car pulls good even without the VTEC kicking in but now we're trying to figure out how to get VTEC working. We're using a PM6 ecu right now.

Well People have told us to do things like hook up vtec to the shift light on a Monster tach, we tried it ...couldn't get it to work. Then we were told to try and hook it up to the highbeams.....we did and it actually worked.

Of course we don't want to leave it that way. We want to do it right. So I'm wondering. What is the CORRECT way to do this? Is there an OBD0 sohc vtec ecu? Should we use an ecu from a JDM b16 crx/integra? How do we get vtec to work properly in this thing?

Thanks
JT

No, you need to buy an external VTEC controller like a Field, Apexi VAFC, or MSD RPM Switch.

your vtec worked when u gave it power to threw your highbeams?
u need to wire it up to your ecu and give it ground.

With SOHC and loud exhaust, its hard to notice the vtec point IMO. I had a mini-me swap a couple of years ago and it was tuff to distinguish the switch over.

I guess with a stock exhaust or, " not so loud " exhaust, it would be easier to tell. I also had a 92 Si and, same for that. Vtec wasnt as noticable.

When I had the mini-me setup, just to insure that it was working, I installed a microswitch for WOT. I could feel it running rich @ any RPM Below 3k so, I knew it was working. After that, I went with the MSD RPM Module.

Good Luck

more info on the rmp switch: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=461576

the rmp switch will work, but its not something you want to use to seal the deal. i would suggest getting a fields vtec/fuel controller down the road. so when ur car is not in vtec u can have a nice economical fuel curve, and when it "hits vtec" you can introduce more fuel with the controller.

That is too funny. You guys manage to come up with the coolest ways to activate your Vtec settings.

Is there a OBD0 vtec ECU?

If not then I guess the cheapest solution would be the Fields VTEC controller?

The kid we did the swap for doesn't have much money to spend at all...

And yeah, it was kinda funny to see him driving towards us and hearing VTEC kickj in and see his high beams come on at the same time.
