Youre a Honda pimp if you can figure this out!!!!
Hi, I have an ek with a jdm obd2 b16a. My question is, what would cause my tach to stop working? I have an si cluster. My car threw a check engine, it was vss (vehicle speed sensor). Took out the speed sensor and cleaned it, no code, but still no working tach. I've checked the connections to the cluster, theyre all good. Can anyone name off anything that could be causing this. Please help, I need to see what the hell I'm revving my motor to!!! Thanks guys
Just maybe your VSS is dead??? Check all wiring going to and from the VSS and get a voltmeter to see if it is indeed the VSS...find a Helms and see what the resistance/current is supposed to be for it and see if yours measures up. Just my .02...get more opinions...Lord knows I don't wanna F your ish up.
Cool, thanks for your info. If the vss was dead though, wouldnt I not get any reading for my mph? Hmm......Are there any wires on the dis. that could be grounded out somewhere? What other wires are tach related? I know that there is the blue wire that is by the harness on the drivers side, that wire is the tach signal I think. What is that little cap on the end of the wire that has that rubber cover over it. Could that little plastic cap have anything to do with it? Thanks
SOMEone has a wiring diagram of this ish...and I think you are right about the VSS and your speedometer. If no one responds that knows more go by a Helms or one of those vehicle books at Rice Zone or Rice Boys
...There are wiring diagrams in the back of the book.

lol. I painted my needles on my cluster red. It took two days before the needles would stop sticking to the little plastic pin that holds them @ 0. I would have to thump my cluster to make them work
.... There fine now.. I just thought id mention it because you never know..

Take off your distributor cap and make sure the blue wire is pushed in all the way.
make sure the tracers on the gauge cluster haven't been severed, and make sure you're not missing any bulbs, you may not get a signal if the current isn't completed.

Your VSS may not be dead (you aren't getting any codes right). But I would swap it out with a known good on and try it again.

Nope, had the problem with a JDM GSR cluster, the tach didn't work, there was a severed tracer and a bulb missing, we followed the pinout and followed the tracer and it was indeed the tach tracer that was severed with a missing bulb, we pulled a bulb from another cluster popped it in and the tach worked.
Thanks for the info guys. Checked the bulbs already, but havent checked the distrubutor. I'll do that right now and let you know if that solves my problem. Do you guys think that the tach on my cluster could have just takin a ****? I'll have to borrow my friends EX cluster and see if his works......
wut code are you getting??? If its a p1298 it deals with vss, o2 sensor, etc. If thats correct then its ur alternator. I had the code 1298 a few weeks back and it turned out to be the alternator. I
So you think it could be my alternator? I know that when my car idles and the lights are on, the lights dim a bit. Didnt think that could cause my tach to stop working. Hmmm.........
first things first, i think you should find another cluster to try out, if it still doesnt work then it will tell you its not the cluster
then you can go from there
then you can go from there
its ur alternator for shure. Mine did the same except it threw some more codes. when ur lights are on at night it dims in and out right? It mess w/ ur speed sensor because its all electrical. Check your alternator/sp sensor fuse under dash on driver side. it should be a 7.5. that should be blown. Put in a new one and it will work but act real funny then fuse will blow again.
Imma HONDA pimp now. hahhaha
When i had this problem no one on this damn board would help me out. But im glad i can help u.

Yeah, I need to borrow my friends cluster tonight. I've been meaning to, but havent had the chance. As for the distributor, I havent touched it at all.
If the problem is my cluster, is there any way to get a new tach needle and components and then just change that out? I don't wanna have to buy a new cluster.

how does your car run? i was always told that the ecu reads from the tach for vtec activation and other signals.
