Discharging the A/C in '90 si
Anyone know how I could do this? I know I dont have to take it to some certified A/C specialist to do it... Which is what my Haynes repair manual tells me to do...
Thanks in advance!

Well to do it right you need to discharge it into a canister or something. So you might as well have some shop do it or else you going to have a canister of old freon in your house, what the hell would you do with it.
well the thing is, my car is totalled now, n its sittin in my garage... im trying to strip it all down and sell all that i can from it... will i need to discharge the a/c to take out the engine? its a sohc zc, fairly new, so i wanna keep that... but if the a/c compressor and stuff is pretty valuable, i might want to take that out too...
You can take out the engine with it in but its mad hard to do. You might as well just crack the nut and let that **** leak out, enviroment will not be your friend but its easy and its not like anyone will find out.
excuse my lack of knowledge, but ur talking about the nut on the a/c pipe between the headers and the radiator, right? Or is there a nut closer to the compressor that i should look for?
and its all gas thats gonna leak out, correct? No crazy hazardous liquid...
thanks for your help dude, my parents are startin to nag me about the junker in their garage, so i need to get it out soon...

heh, I did this in a friends garage a couple months ago.. just loosen the bolt on the ac compressor, either one of those 2 bolts that connect those 2 lines. Its just gas, no liquid.

Cool, thanks guys!
I did loosen one of the bolts a couple of weeks ago, but i stopped as soon as i heard the hissing, and went straight to the manual... When i read that i should take it somewhere, i immediately tightened the bolt back up... I did have a feeling that i would be able to just let it slowly leak out though... i just didnt want to mess anything up!

I am not condoning it, I am just saying be careful, if thats what he chooses to do
The politically correct thing to do is bring the car to an AC shop and have them "evacuate" the system. R12 is bad for the enviroment!! That's why newer cars use R134.
The fact that the car is totaled and in the garage rules that out.
If breaking one of the seals bothers you, there should be a "shrader" valve somewhere in the system where the freon can be vented out. It's at this point where the AC shop would charge the system. A shrader valve is the same as on your tire and if you press on the center plunger, the valve will open.

but there are mobile mecahincs that can come & do that; my gf's dad is a mobile mecahinic & he does it. do what you want but i don't agree w/ the idea of just letting that stuff out-what would you say if someone wanted to leave waste in your back yard?
Call all A/C places in town saying you want the A/C system evacuated, theres about a 99% chance someone will do it for free as they can purify and resell the refridgerant at an insane price. Also twisting the nut and backing off is not the best idea, if it is allowed to escape too quickly it can pull oil out of the system when all you want is the refridgerant.
I might add, I personally did this. Out of 20 or so places in the phone book, the 3rd one I called did it for free.
