H22 Swap and Gas Consumption
I'm very close to the purchase of a swap but I want to have to all the details together before I get into it. I don't want to have a motor sitting around I can't use!
I'm concerned about the fuel consumption/wear and tear of the motor during highway driving. From what I understand the motor spins at 4k when doing 80mph. That **** just ain't gonna fly. I put 25-30K a year on my car on the highways and biways of the United States.
Sooooooooooo... I'm looking for anyone's experiences with hybrid trannies, gear swapping, someone whose got an H23 tranny on a H22, etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can do the H23 the first 3 gears are the same as the H22 its just 4th and 5th that are different. Also you could use the F22 tranny but i have heard the gears are a little long for the H22.

I wouldn't recommend going with the f22a tranny. The gears are way too long. The h23a gears are not too bad. From personal experience we have seen h22as in civics getting 27 mpg this is with the regualar h22a tranny. Which is not too bad.

not sure where he got the numbers but it shows the H23 and H22 do not share the first three gear ratios.
Does anyone know if there are (and what they are) differences between the USDM and JDM trannies both in structure and gearing?

I personally am very tempted with this sort of setup when my F22 lets go on me. I drive way too much to be able to afford all the extra gas on the H22 tranny.
Careful on thinking you can switch just the final drives.
I tried to use a F22 final drive in a different F22 tranny and it wouldnt assemble.
You'll have to switch the drive gear of the counter/mainshaft that matches the final drive.
(BTW if anyone has a H22 tranny they want to sell...pm me)

You would spend 4k on an engine swap and then be worried about gas money? lol
You see, Nick M, it is important for me not to spend too much on gas, but also, it is important for me not to get bored in my car, cuz then it costs a lot more if I get tempted to change the car. Hence the occasionnal upgrades, though modest, but keeping me happy.
Anyways, I wouldn't swap in the H22 before the F22 goes bad, so it wouldn't cost way more anyways, since I'd have to replace the engine anyways.

I talked to a guy who said he swapping a 99 Civic SI's fifth gear and couner shaft into the H22 tranny. He also said a lot fo other things he was going to do that seemed rediculous so I couldn't figure out if he was bullshitting or not.
I couldn't find 2point6's thread in the Prelude forum.
And I'm not interest in swapping the final drive I just want to improve the ratio of the fifth gear. Anyone know of a place that will make custom gears?

i've heard ppl swapping out the 5th gears of similar civic trannies. a while back when i was thinking of doing the h22 swap, i was wondering if i could just take an f22 fifth gear, and use it to replace the h22's fifth gear. maybe you might want to do some research on that option.
get a v-afc and lean out.
last week a got 29mpg, the week before was 28mpg.
during the winter i got 26-27mpg cause i had to warm up the car.
on a long highway trip i got 32mpg.
this with the jdm h22 tranny. i also drive about 80mph on the highway.

You all act like its going to turn into a V8 sucking down gas like its going out of style. Keep in mind gas is going to cost more with the swap regardless since you now HAVE to use premimum where as before you could get away with crap gas like say 87 octane. The phrase "Pay to play" is what i think of when performance comes to mind and any time I see the cost of something and **** a brick (see the Kumho v700's i need right now, its how much EACH?) I never forget that I can bail out of this hobbie or enjoy it to its fullest. You match up an F tranny wiht an H motor and it will be great for the high way but suck for any thing else. Just calling it like I see it. You would drop out of vtec any time you shift with an F tranny so if you plan on racing the car at all you might as well forget about it.
Im swapping the H22 and using my stock F22 tranny with a diffrent clutch is all. Might be slower than an H22 with the H22 or H23 tranyy but when boost is introduced i dont ill have any problems, except for maybe a blown synchro

I've already looked into this, and i'ts not a simple swap. some shop in texas did it and the tranny self-destructed. you'd be better off trying to find someone to machine a custom gear for you

I am currently using the f22 accord tranny on my boosted h22, mainly for the longer gearing.I've used the h22 and h23 trannies as well on my setup. the h23 is almost identical to the h22 tranny. when I had the h23 tranny, i remmeber the rpms being around 3700 rpms at 60mph, but with the f22 tranny, 60mph is cruising along at only 1900 rpm. its saved me alot on gas. keep in mind that the f22/h22 tranny/engine combo is only good if you have boost or nitrous.
