lose torque/HP with 8lb flywheel on turbo d16?
i've read that a light flywheel will speed up the spooling process, but i read somewhere that you lose highend power or torque with turbo cars? i dont get it...
i dont know about losing power or torque, but you'll prob lose revs in between shifts. there was a post awhile back with a car gaining hp and tq due to just a lightened flywheel, but it was a 300zx, which isn't exactly comparable to a 1.6L single cam 4 banger. i dont think its the flywheel directly responsible for quicker spoolup, just that ur engine can rev quicker so it is able to spool the turbo in less time. i dont see how u would lose power with strictly turbo cars tho. if anything i would think you would see either some or no gain.

so why do you lose torque? and gain HP highend? everyone says the same thing, but i dont get the reasoning..because ive never seen any...explain please
because There is not enough balance in the low end and in the top end the flywheel is already spinning, therefore it's a eaiser transfer of power at higher rpm
i talked to my mechanic and he said the only difference you will notice is making the car move from standing still since there is not much torque "momentum" to transfer power to the wheel, instead you will rely more on engine power instead of energy stored in the flywheel to start spinning the wheels. he thinks it is beneficial for turbo cars for possible quicker spooling, but doesnt really know much else about it. anyone else want to comment?

You won't lose any power. If anything, you'll gain power. The "loss" of torque is what nd8ch just mentioned, but you won't physically lose power. I wish i could find the thread, there was like a 10-page thread on lightened flywheels and their benefits. All good
you wont loose any torque or HP, u just loose inertia off the line because of the lesser rotating mass to give the driveline a "kick in the ***" to get goin.

no you will not loose any hp/tq.. it will only help to accelerate with turbo.

A lightened flywheel doesn't make more or less power. If you think about it, you'll see that logically, it doesn't create any power. It's similar to having lighter wheels, just less unsprung weight.
Personally, what i love about lightweight flywheels is the ability to match revs when downshifting. I used to have to wait forever for the revs to go where i wanted them to, now they go up and down very quickly.

I really get a kick out of some of these posts.. Do you guys even think about what your saying.. Like these guys on the exhaust thread talking about losing power with 3" exhaust because he is only running 10psi.. Where do you find this stuff? the great ricer handbook?

With an 8lb flywheel you car will rev up alot faster creating better spool time....also the rpms drop faster but when you race your foot never comes off the gas anyway ...so nothing to worry about. As far as the torque is concerned i dont think you lose any substantial amount of torque....hondas shine top end so revving faster is a good thing. If you want torque bottom end buy a mustang.
im having a hard time deciding what to do with my H22 build. a friend is telling me that when he used a light flywheel it suxd badly and his car was slow untill he put the stock flywheel back in. i just got a new 8lb fidanza. is this a bad idea for my H22. 6 puck? shes a daily driver, come night shes a racer.
im running a 7lb UR flywheel on my built d16 and its really great. but the downside is, i'll drop down to 500 rpm and bump back up to 1k. i believe its dropping so fast the ecu can't read it fast enough. but you'll have to raise the idle up a bit
I drove every day with a 7.5lb flywheel with a 6 puck unsprung in a honda....In the talon a lightweight flywheel and act 2600 clutch....the lightened flywheel makes a world of difference...just get the flywheel.
