Default Wrapping Intake

Anyone ever wrap their intake with a thermo. type wrap as used on headers?

My AEM CAI seems to absorbe a lot of heat, I think that if I wrap it in a header wrap that would insulate the intake and therefore lower the air temp. being taken in, to give sightly better hp and torque. Any thoughts on that?

I wouldnt.

Keep in mind that insulating it will also retain heat longer when wrapped.

i.e it will keep it cooler for a while, but once it gets heat soaked it will make the intake hot longer than if it wasnt wrapped (would cool down more easily unwrapped).

what you can do is wrap your header(if you have one), it cool off the temp. inside of the hood.

Yeah, it would hold heat in longer. The only reason I asked is becuase I've seen that done, though I'm not sure what material they used, it looked like the heat wrap for headers.

We'll I plan on wrapping my header when I get one in the next few weeks. What about VIS CF hoods with vents on top, that should help with heat dispersion.

header/exhaust wrap looks like rag, they have the blownish color.
it's different from the silver wrap(fiberglass material with tape on back).

silver wrap(for intake, ac line, etc) is suppose to keep the heat away from the item that you wrap.

exhaust/header wrap is to keep the heat from escaping the item you wrap.
it help to decrease over all temp. but it might shortend the life of the header/turbo/cat
because too much fu_king heat.

exhaust header wrap are cheaper.about 40 buck for 50 feet
while the silver tape is 15 buck for little bit.
I'll post some pic of my header and turbo chargepipe later one...mummy

turbo's heat can melt a cf hood(lol)
vented hood helps if you dont mind the bling bling factors.
stock hood have those heat protecting mats=
wrap it good

Are you using silver tape on your pipe from turbo to intake manifold?

speaking from personal and stew P.'s advice..
1'x50 for the top pieces
2'x50 for collectors
I use 2" for all my header, it's a pain in the *** to wrap it while it's on the car.
unless you have your wifey's slim hands to do it.
wear a mask and gloves it's itchy and harmful.
use ss clamps instead of header ties bullsh_t

oh yeah..i took off my header and no sight or rust and damage=

I have my straight custom made intake on my h22a wrapped in heat resistant "silver" thermal tape, it keeps the heat from warming the air im drawing for the fender

it keeps the heat longer when the car is turned off and the ambient air around it is cooler than the intake, but wouldnt the wrap lower the equilibrium temp of the intake while the car is on? since intake = cooler than engine bay, thus wrap keeps the engine bay heat from reaching hte intake easily, thus keeping hte equilibrium temp lower while the car is on.

The heat would only be kept out of the intake for a longer time. Once the insulation gets hot from the engine running it takes a lot more to cool it than it does the aluminum intake.

Think of it this way:

If you use the charge air to cool the aluminum piping down, wouldnt you want to just cool the aluminum and be done with it instead of trying to cool down the insulating wrap too (since it will also see engine temp)?

The wrap holds as much heat in as it keeps heat out.

Where did you get the heat resistant "silver" thermal tape from and how much did it cost?

Let my see if this is right.

Header wrap = Keeps heat contained to what ever wrapped around

Silver thermal tape= Reflects heat of what its wrapped around

Now this is probably not worth it, though what the hell;
Header wrap + Silver theramal tape on top = Layer of insulation + Prevent heat from entering.

sorry about the confusing pictures.
I(not really me) wrap the header wrap outside of silver wrap because the a/c line is too damn close to my turbo, header wrap will not burn off because it can withstand alot of heat before it give out.

This is the thermo-tec wrap

I used the DEI wrap...

Yes, use the 1" for the primaries and 2" for the secondaries. This stuff works so good that I touched my header after driving for awhile (on accident) and didn't get burned. Mine doesn't look that great but it is very functional. Get the DEI silicone spray to keep out moisture and your header will last longer.
